Ken Rosenthal Absolutely Ripped Tom Ricketts To Shreds Over Their Failure To Sign Alex Bregman

Yesterday on The Stretch I said that I would wait until July to be mad. I would wait to see if the Cubs reinvested that money at the deadline to improve the team to go win the Division and more. Maybe I still had vacation brain because FUCK that. Impossible to argue with Ken Rosenthal here. Why wait until July when you have to give up assets to go get someone that could hopefully get you into the playoffs when you could've signed a guy in the winter who would help you run away with the division for an entire season? Then you hear the Cubs weren't even really close. The 4th highest offer for Bregman. Losing to the Red Sox is one thing. Getting out-bid by the Tigers is a joke.

Top 5 in revenue

Top 5 in franchise value

3rd in the NL Central

14th in payroll

It's not an accident. It's not a rebuild. The Cubs window is 2025. That's it. Tucker isn't extended. And their core isn't exactly young anymore. Shota is 30. Swanson is 30. Happ and Seiya turn 30 in August. Steele is going to need a new deal. This team should be trying to everything they can to win and instead Ricketts is trying to do everything he can to be slightly above average. Keep the ballpark full, a glimmer of hope alive, the cash flowing, and when the season ends with the Cubs on the outside looking in again, say aw shucks and talk about 2016. It's the Jerry Reinsdorf model all over again. It's a disease infecting the entire city. The Cubs are the only big market club in the division and they routinely get pummeled by teams up I-94 and down I-55 who win far more with much less revenue. Ricketts, by all indications of his actions...doesn't care. Time is flying by. It's been 9 years since the World Series team. It's been 8 since the Cubs were truly competitive. This "rebuild" has gotten the Cubs all the way to the middle which is apparently right where Tom Ricketts wants to be.
