Uh Oh - 'Captain America: Brave New World' Debuts With A 48% On Rotten Tomatoes
'Captain America: Brave New World' held its premiere in Los Angeles last night (and officially released in some countries overseas) and you're not gonna believe this, but everyone who saw it seems to be completely split over the quality of the film. Some are saying it's a return-to-form for Marvel and nails the 90s espionage vibe it's going for, some are saying it's fine-to-pretty-good but nothing to write home about, and others are saying it's the final nail in the coffin of the MCU.
I've split the fan reviews I've seen into three groups: Good, Mid, and Bad. Here's a selection from each category to give you a sense of what the word is....
Good Reviews
Mid Reviews
Bad Reviews
(I don't even know if that last negative review is real but it made me laugh so I included it)
For what it's worth, it was a lot easier for me to compile good reviews than the mid/bad ones. I don't know if that is just based on my personal algorithm or what (and it truly may be), but there was just a LOT of positive to choose from and not nearly as much negative on my timeline. I'd say it's something like 65/35 or 70/30 in terms of good/bad among fans right now. Critics, on the other hand, have been much harsher….
That's not super inspiring, but also - I'm not too concerned about that either. I never thought 'Brave New World' would be groundbreaking or revolutionary, and didn't really have a lot of faith it would be a hit among critics. I've set my personal bar at 'Shang-Chi' and based on the fan reviews, think it might still clear that!
One thing everyone seems to be in agreement about is that Harrison Ford rocks as President Ross (a recasting after William Hurt passed away in real life) - and as a massive Harrison Ford fan, that has me thrilled. He had a few years where it definitely felt like he was mailing in his performances, but somewhere around 'The Force Awakens' and 'Blade Runner 2049' that Ford charm came back in full swing. Now he's back to crushing and showing off his comedic side in 'Shrinking' - and he apparently goes all in on playing the Red fucking Hulk. If nothing else, I love that we're still getting awesome roles and performances outta Harrison Ford.
I'll be seeing 'Brave New World' tomorrow afternoon with Clem, and we're gonna record My Mom's Basement right afterwards, so be sure to look out for our reviews then. Oh, and check out that video at the top of this blog if you need a refresher on any of the Captain America/MCU stuff before the movie - I spent a truly absurd amount of time editing it. Hell, I'll toss it at the bottom of the blog too. I need all the views I could get! Here you go!
