MOVIE REVIEW: Amy Schumer's 'Kinda Pregnant' is Kinda Awful
When Lainy's plan to settle down and start a family falls apart, she puts on a fake baby bump, tells a lie, and accidentally falls for her dream guy.
ICYMI I blogged this trailer a while back with a more comprehensive breakdown of Amy Schumer last month.
This movie obviously faced an uphill battle right from the start. Amy Schumer might be the most hated figure in Hollywood right now, it's a Netflix comedy from Happy Madison and the concept doesn't seem to have a lot of humor past surface level. Well, even with lowered expectations, I was disappointed. However, I watched it right before the game which I think helped me enjoy one of the worst super bowls I can remember.
As always, I'll break it down into a simple pro and con list.
Pros:
- There are a couple laughs without a doubt. But for that to be all a comedy movie is not great.
- I feel like I haven't seen Damon Wayans Jr. in a minute and he stole all the scenes he was in.
Cons:
- Schumer just isn't funny. The "Let me scream some curses and sex words out loud" as a comedic device method has been dead for a while now. I don't think the script offers a ton more to deal with, but still.
- I think Will Forte is one of the funnier comedy actors out there and this movie WASTES his talents. You don't cast a guy like him to play a normal, 2D guy.
- Similarly, I think it wasted Jillian Bell as well. If you asked me like 5-10 years ago who the top comedic actresses in the world would be, I would have had her up there for sure. I'm not sure what has happened since Workaholics, but damn.
- This Rebel Wilson 2.0 actress….was bad.
Overall a bad movie that mercifully was a streaming release and didn't make it to theaters. I don't know what's next for Schumer at this point but it can't be anything more like this, 'I Feel Pretty', or other sloppy movies.
