The Luka Doncic Trade Was So Insane That Even Shams Thought His Phone Was Hacked When He Got The News

Part of what made the initial reaction around the Luka Doncic trade so shocked was not only that it came in the middle of the night with zero reported leaks leading up to it, but also the fact that nobody in real time could figure out if Shams' Twitter had been hacked. Over the last few years fake Woj/Shams accounts have blown up during the NBA's trade deadline/free agency, and that's why during this part of the NBA calendar you always have to double and triple check the account. Not only was the news itself shocking, but the wording is also what led many to believe in real time that this was fake
The "yes, it's real", the fact that only 1 pick was included, it had all the makings of a hacked tweet. If you look at all the initial reaction videos that have gone viral in the last few days, they're all the same. Everyone is convinced Shams was hacked.
Well, as it turns out, Shams himself thought the exact same thing!
Does that not sum everything up perfectly? This trade was so insane and made so little sense that even Shams himself didn't initially believe it when he got the scoop. That's how you KNOW we're dealing with something truly outrageous. Considering Shams has broken hundreds of trades and dropped some absolute Shams Bombs in his career, the fact that this is the first time we've ever heard him say he thought his phone was hacked just goes to show you how shocking this trade really was. Everyone, including the news breaker didn't even want to believe it at first!
I'd give anything to see that text conversation. How did Shams respond? Who was the side that texted him? My guess is the Lakers side given his connection to Klutch. I imagine if someone associated with the Lakers side texts you that they have traded for LUKA DONCIC and only gave up THAT package, you have to assume you're being trolled. Shit, we all thought that was the case even after Shams put it out there, so imagine how he felt getting the news first.
For those keeping track at home, let's just take a second to run through all the reactions to this deal.
1. Rob Pelinka thought Nico Harrison was joking
2. Patrick Dumont (Mavs owner) initially laughed at the idea
3. Shams thought his phone was hacked when he got the news
If that doesn't solidify this trade as one of the most insane moves in NBA history, I'm not sure what does? When every single person associated with this move either laughs at it or thinks it's fake….what does that tell you? Meanwhile, Nico Harrison things he crushed this trade. I don't even know how to make sense of that. I guess at this point what choice does he have other than to double down and ignore the noise, but man, I can't think of a reaction to a trade that compares to this and there have been A LOT of bad trades in NBA history.
