Chip Kelly Is Heading To The Raiders And Just Two Weeks After Winning The Title, Ohio State Is Without Both Its Coordinators
So it was just announced that Chip Kelly is heading back to the NFL. Breaking news? Yes. Surprising news? No. This was always going to happen at some point. Chip's stint in Columbus was always going to be short lived, so I'm thankful for the year he spent here and the National Title he brought. And I guess that's just the price of doing business when you win a National Championship. Your assistant coaches get new, great opportunities. So while I'm happy for Chip, that now means the Buckeyes need to fill the vacancies at Defensive Coordinator, Offensive Line Coach, and now Offensive Coordinator. That's a lot....
And here's my gut reaction to this news: go get the very best. This is now the very best opening, not just in college football, but in the entire sport. Think about what Ohio State brings back:
- the best player in the country in Jeremiah Smith (for two more years!!!)
- a 5-star QB in Julian Sayin (or a 5-star QB in St. Clair) for at least two more years!!!
- an experienced offensive line that just played 16 games
- the best WR Room in the entire country. It's not just Jeremiah. It's Carnell Tate, Brandon Inniss, Mylan Graham, and the #1 tight end in the portal, Max Klare
The fact of the matter is that whoever takes this job is able to use it for 1-2 years to get ANY JOB IN AMERICA. I kid you not, I'd call Lincoln Riley. I'd call Lane Kiffin. I'd call Sark down at Texas. I'd call Will Stein. I'd call Alex Golesh and say hey man, you make $2.5 million being the head coach at USF. Come take $3 million and call our plays for two years and then go be the head coach at Tennessee. And I'd call the guy at Penn State, make him drive over, and then fart in his face. But in all seriousness, this is the best job you could ever imagine. Brian Harline MIGHT very well be the right guy. But we need to explore all options before just handing him the keys.
Ultimately my guess is it's Hartline and we bring back Kevin Wilson. And I'd be very happy with that. But if Lane Kiffin wants to come coach a championship contender and call our plays, I'd ask him before making any other decisions.
