Conor McGregor Got In The Ring And Tried To Set Up A Bare Knuckle Fight With Jeremy Stephens Last Night
Alright, so I guess this is Conor's new thing - setting up fights he knows have no chance of actually happening!
Even BKFC President Dave Feldman knew how delusional the thought of Conor McGregor vs Jeremy Stephens in a bare knuckle fight was when BKFC co-owner McGregor made him "announce" it at last night's post-fight press conference....
....but I know you gotta keep the Champ Champ happy and do what he says! If he says announce I'm fighting Jesus Christ - you announce the debut of the Messiah, LIVE on pay-per-view!
It's just frustrating after McGregor did this sorta thing with Mike Perry at BKFC almost two years ago....
….then "announced" a fight with Dan Hooker in the UFC last year (after being locked in with Michael Chandler forever)….
….and then obviously with all the Logan Paul (and KSI) shit recently, outside of the UFC….
….and now he's trying it with Jeremy Stephens in his own bare knuckle promotion. Unfortunately he's turned into the boy who cried wolf fight. I think Conor believes if there's enough hype generated behind one of these matchups, the UFC's hand will be forced into letting it happen - like the Mayweather fight back in the day - but the market ain't that hot anymore.
What a come up for Stephens over the years, though, from "Who da fook is that guy?!" to whatever that was….
Conor acknowledged him and showed him some love! It's like he finally earned the respect of his father; a feel-good story! I wonder if Stephens will even remember that, though - he didn't look like he knew what was happening in the ring.
Oh, and everyone's talking about this bizarre faceoff - but Stephens stopped hometown boy Eddie Alvarez on the stool after dropping him multiple times in the main event last night….
….and it was a pretty great performance. Alvarez's chin is cooked, but it was a good scrap before the finish and I could totally see Stephens being the perfect fit for BKFC going forward. He's definitely got that "JUST BLEED" energy necessary for the promotion….
….but I digress. Watching McGregor desperately try to set up these circus type fights outside of the UFC is just so sad because it feels like he knows (and is almost openly acknowledging) that it's over. I know a lot of you will say, "It's been over for years, Bob!", but obviously I was in denial. At least I had Conor McGregor saying he was on the verge of the greatest comeback in sports history and releasing documentaries about how hard he's working towards his return and whatnot to keep the hope alive - I mean, shit….the guy had a fight booked last year! It seemed like it was happening!
Now it's just talk of boxing matches and bare knuckle stints with YouTubers and guys waaay past their prime, and he's even begging Logan Paul to help him create buzz around these things….
I interpreted that clip as Conor McGregor asking Logan Paul why he didn't help create buzz around the $250mil boxing match in India, and Logan being like - "Dude, we both have bosses that would never let that happen in a trillion years. What did you want me to do?" McGregor's response is basically, "I'm not the only one with a boss, either! You have one too!" and everyone looks like they knew that already. It truly makes me sad.
Theo Von describing the Champ Champ's energy at the Trump Inauguration cracked me the fuck up, though, to end this blog on a positive note….
