After Crushing 'Nosferatu', Robert Eggers Next Movie Will Be About Werewolves

Eggers has co-written Werwulf, a werewolf horror project that he will direct as his next feature.

Focus Features, Universal’s art house division which released and financed Nosferatu, is back in business with the filmmaker for Werwulf. The company has also dated the thriller for a North America release on Christmas Day, 2026. The parties are hoping for more holiday greetings as Nosferatu was also released on Christmas Day and went on to become an improbable hit.

Eggers wrote Werwulf with Sjón, who co-wrote heady Viking saga The Northman with the filmmaker. While details are scarce, sources say the story is set in 13th century England. The script also features dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated to Old English.

ICYMI, 'Nosferatu' did pretty damn well at the box office and played well with critics and audiences alike despite being a pretty artsy movie.

Eggers is a interesting director in that I don't think there is a lot of grey area for movie goers with him. If you like his style, you probably love all his movies. If you don't you probably hate all of them. 'Nosferatu' was no exception. However, I think that anyone can objectivly say that the movie gave you a much fresher look at vamps than we've seen in 99% of the slop thrown out in the genre over the last 15+ years. That is what excites me about this pairing.

When vamps took the stage in the mid 2000s, werewolves took the role of Robin to their Batman(no joke intended). They're typically the slaves or generally inferiors to the vamps and didn't get a lot of love. Their most recent main character representation, Wolf Man, is currently sitting on a 55% on RT. Woof(again, no joke intended). Werewolves deserves better! Where vamps were the smooth, seductive finesse bitches, Werewolves are the cursed, hairy, diesel tanks. We should all prefer them to vamps!

Hopefully, Eggers can give more great production design, writing and costume work to get these beasts back on top.
