The Biggest Story In College Hoops Today: NPOY Favorite Johni Broome Appeared To Seriously Injure His Ankle On A Freak Play
Coming into today there was a consensus around college basketball that Auburn was the best team in the sport. The same team that fought each other on their plane going to Houston a couple months ago, yeah, that team. The main reason? Johni Broome. The guy was the NPOY favorite coming into today, looked the part, all the normal stuff said here. But that injury right there? Yeah, that doesn't look good. That's not a normal rolling of the ankle. No weight on it, screaming in pain, ruled out for the rest of the game:
The positive here is Auburn avoided a complete disaster and was able to get a 66-63 win. Not that a loss hurts them in the long run or anything, but you want to win the SEC regular season and everything, you have to find a way to win at South Carolina this year. They did that. But the biggest story in college basketball right now is this injury. Auburn wants to play through Broome, whether it's posting him up or bringing him up top in a hi-lo set. The offense is run through him and yeah, I know, Auburn has other options. But again, there's a reason he was the NPOY favorite. He was averaging basically 19/11 and 3 blocks this season. You don't just replace that.
We obviously don't know how serious it is yet, but just based on reaction and the no weight it appears to be serious.
