World No. 1 Tennis Player Jannik Sinner Will Meet With The World Anti-Doping Agency In April As They Seek To Ban Him For At Least a Year For His Positive Steroid Test In 2024
The first grand slam of the tennis season is set to get underway tomorrow night. The headlines on the men's side are all over the place whether it be Novak Djokovic teaming up with Andy Murray as his new coach, Carlos Alcaraz's chase for the career slam, Nick Kyrgios' return, Joao Fonseca's arrival, and much more. One dark cloud hovers over the rest though — Jannik Sinner's presence.
The too long, didn't read version of his situation is that last year he tested positive for a banned substance called Clostebol. It's illegal in the United States, but available over the counter in Italy. He actually tested positive for it on two separate occasions. Both tests found very small traces of the substance (less than one billionth of a gram), but nonetheless it was present in his blood. Instead of the news immediately breaking and a ban being handed down, Sinner was given the right to a quick appeal without the public finding out. While that was being sorted out he was allowed to keep playing as the details were sorted out. Keep in mind, this luxury does not apply for a large majority of tennis players. Typically you test positive, get suspended, and the news becomes public.
Right before the US Open the news finally came to light and it was determined that Sinner was not at fault. As the story goes, his trainer applied the steroid to a cut on his own finger and then proceeded to rub down Sinner's legs, allowing it into his system. The only real punishment he faced was the stripping of any points or prize money won during Indian Wells back in March of 2024.
Players and fans from all over have expressed their displeasure with the ruling. Many of them upset at the fact that all of this was allowed to be kept quiet for so long while other players of lesser rank are typically handed their suspensions immediately without much ability to fight it. Special treatment if you will. Nick Kyrgios has been the loudest of them all being against Sinner and how this was allowed to happen.
Since the ruling, WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency, has appealed the ruling made by the International Tennis Integrity Agency. They seem determined to levy a legitimate suspension towards Sinner and ban him for at least a year. Today we found out that hearing is going to happen in April.
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Top-ranked tennis player Jannik Sinner will go to sport’s highest court in April for the World Anti-Doping Agency’s appeal that seeks to ban him from the sport for at least one year.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Friday it scheduled a closed-doors hearing on April 16-17 at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
WADA is challenging a decision last year by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) not to suspend Sinner for what it judged was accidental contamination by a banned anabolic steroid last March.
APRIL??? Bro it's January 10th. We're about to get a grand slam under way with Indian Wells and the Miami Open also happening in March. Sinner has to wait on all of this until April? That feels insane. How on Earth could this not be heard sooner? Okay you don't want to interfere with the Australian Open, no problem. What are you doing in February? And after that it will probably be another month before we know an official ruling. Whatever side you're on, waiting until April to decide this shit is outrageous. This is the number one player in the world!
It's a fucking mess. You've got the world number one and defending champ down in Australia walking around where he very well likely could be suspended for at least a year based on what WADA determines. Sure what they found was a microscopic amount of the substance and they claim it was administered by accident. but pro athletes around the world are responsible for what goes into their bodies. That's just how it goes. If you fuck that up, you face the consequences. For fuck's sake, Emma Raducanu refused a spray to treat her ant bite because she was scared it would trigger a positive test. So she just dealt with her hand blowing up like a balloon.
Is it a big coincidence that Sinner experienced the most success in his tennis career last season? He went a historic 73-6, winning two slams, and the year end finals. He's always been a top level player so this isn't a Brady Anderson situation, but it certainly makes you raise an eyebrow.
For now he continues to play while every other player on the men's side looks on frustrated at the special treatment he's received. Confusing times indeed. Beyond moronic we have to wait until April. Happy tennis season everybody!
