Please Like My Sport: College Basketball's Opening Week Is So Damn Stupid, Needs To Stop Trying To Challenge Football

I blogged about the 24 hour marathon on Monday. I promise I will blog that every single year because it needs to come back. But, now I realized it goes even deeper than that. I was looking around the schedule just seeing what's going on, planning my nights out and look at the games we have on Saturday:

That doesn't even include Kansas/UNC on Friday night. Loaded games. Games that casual fans would want to watch. You know what the best game is we have tonight and tomorrow? Vermont/Auburn and Northern Iowa/Milwaukee. That's not how you draw in fans to watch your sport, even if Vermont is always a good mid-major. We're talking about trying to get eyes on the sport and please like my sport here.

There was a time when college basketball used to open on Friday nights. The games were awesome, even if they were played on boats or things like that. The sport decided to change that when no one paid attention to what was an awesome Indiana/Kansas game in 2017. It was late Friday, no one talked about it because it was football. Football will always dominate the talk, no one is doubting that. So college basketball did the smart thing and push the season opener on Tuesday nights. We had the Champions Classic to start the season in 2019. We had games that matter.

How do we not have a decent game today or tomorrow? This is all I can think about today, granted it's a slow day. I say it all the time. I understand college basketball is more of a niche sport, there are few of us who are diehard fans. We will watch all the games no matter what. But stop going up against college football and the NFL. It's the dumbest thing college basketball does. Own Tuesday/Wednesday when you're going up against legendary MACtion instead.
