It Took Just Under 17 Minutes Into The New NHL Season For A Legit Save Of The Year Candidate From New Devils Goalie Jacob Markström (No, Really, The NHL Season Started Today)
This biggest weak spot for the New Jersey Devils in recent years (other than shit-talking fans who live in Vancouver) has been its crease. Their locker room in the 2020's has seen more pads than the opening scene of CARRIE. But local lad Tommy Fitz swindled Calgary out of its #1 goalie Jacob Markström in June and the Swede paid incredible dividends before the first period of the new season was over when he made this amazing save.
I mean, look at where the puck is after coming off the stick of Buffalo Sabre Nicolas Aube-Kubel's stick. Then look at where Markström's twig is located. Amazing.
How do you say "GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!!!" in Czech?
Like everyone else watching, I thought NA-K shanked an absolute gimme. Nope. Marky just gave a raging hope boner to millions of Devils fans while most Calgary fans probably felt like jumping into actual flames after the N.J. Devil pitchforks them right in their mugs.
Oh yeah, no bulshit, the 2024-25 NHL regular season really did start at 1PM ET this afternoon over in the Czech Republic ("his momma call him Czech Republic, I'mma call him Czech Republic"). I suspect 99.6% of the people who read this blog headline found that out when they read the blog headline. And for those who did know and live outside the Buffalo and Newark TV markets, you weren't able to stream the game on the usual NHL streamers that you pay for because [clears throat to shout from the rooftops for the 1,482,395th time]…
Once again, the NHL Network does not have a website to stream its content from. In 2024. So unless you still pay for cable or satellite (sup, Boomer) or you want to subscribe to yet another service JUST FOR THE NHL NETWORK, then you were screwed out of watching the debut game of the NHL season just as the league comes off arguably its best season of the Expansion Era. Christ, I love the NHL with every fiber of my being buy why must they make it so hard sometimes?

But enough of the yin. The yang is so fucking awesome and the NHL sure didn't fuck this one up. That would be the new show on Amazon Prime that dropped this AM…
I'm still in the midst of devouring FACEOFF: INSIDE THE NHL and it's been nothing short of phenomenal thus far. I'll have a longer review piece when I finish it. But do yourself a favor, whether you like hockey or not, and binge the six eps this weekend. You'll either become a bigger fan of the NHL or you'll become a new fan of the NHL.
The squads will battle again tomorrow at a different Bat-time (10AM) but on the same Bat-channel. You know, the one that does not have a site to stream its content from. Meanwhile, the NHL is just creating more and more cyber versions of Momma-Rice.
Go Bs!!!
