The Deliverance Is A New Netflix Horror Movie That Is The Perfect Primer To Get You Ready For Halloween
Summer is over, the air is crisp, football is back, pumpkin has found its way back to every menu - it's officially sp0oOky season.
The best way to get your mind right for the most wonderful time of the year is with horror movies, and Netflix's The Deliverance is the perfect new movie to set the tone for Halloween.
If you watch the trailer, half the movie will be spoiled, so I suggest you raw dog this movie experience and go in knowing nothing. I went into this movie not knowing dick about it, except for the extremely basic description on the Netflix home screen and a picture of Glenn Close. When I saw Glenn Close was in the movie, I thought to myself, "Damn, she's a big name for a straight to streaming horror movie. I'll give this a chance." I had no clue the extremely successful Lee Daniels was the director of this movie, but that would have only made me want to watch the movie more.
Daniels directed Precious, which wasn't exactly a movie plot that had me rushing to the theater, and is to this day is the most depressing movie I have ever seen. Because Precious is completely demoralizing, I'll never in a million years watch again, BUT Lee Daniels did an incredible job telling a story in that movie. Daniels does a solid job with telling the story in The Deliverance, and is helped with the entire cast acting their dicks off the whole time. The first 2/3's of the movie are great, but the plot gets a little weird towards the end by getting heavy into religion and loses some of its spooky charm by leaning heavily into CGI and special effects. If the ending starts to lose you, don't worry, Glenn Close has one of the most shocking lines in the history of cinema that makes it all worth a watch. It sounds like I'm exaggerating, but holy shit my jaw was on the floor when 77 year old Glenn Close said what she said. I'm not posting spoilers in this blog, so if you don't care about the movie, but want to know what she said - click here - I was howling laughing at how ridiculous this got.
When the movie was over, they threw up the based on true events graphic, and I immediately recognized the house from an Indianapolis Star article from like 2016. Reading the article the movie is based on freaked me the fuck out back in the day, so now I understood why the movie made me watch 3 episodes of How I Met Your Mother before I was able to calm down, and finally fall asleep
For some reason Lee Daniels changes the location of the paranormal house from Gary, Indiana to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Not sure why the movie needed a location change? When I think mystical and supernatural it's not like Pittsburgh is the first place to pop into my head, but I'm sure the director had his reasons. Daniels said that during filming paranormal things started happening on set, so they had to have a real life pastor come in to pray for the cast and crew. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Messing around and taunting the supernatural is only going to bring bad things upon you.

This isn't the greatest horror movie I've ever seen, but it's definitely entertaining, and everything around the movie (onset and offset) is creepy. It's hard to find a horror movie with great acting and good character development, but The Deliverance has you caring up until the end, even though some of the special effects make the movie a little cheesy and over the top. Despite a few flaws, I'll add this supernatural thriller to the rotation of scary movies to watch when spooky season hits.
