The Dream Of The Celtics Having Amazon Money Looks To Be Dead After Jeff Bezos Says He Has No Plans To Purchase The Team
After the possibility of Jeff Bezos potentially purchasing the Boston Celtics was initially floated out there, I've spent the ensuing 24 hours imagining what it would be like to have an owner worth $195B cutting the checks. For reference, Steve Ballmer, a guy who spends whatever the hell it takes in his effort to make the Clippers relevant, is worth "only" $123B. In this dream scenario, Bezos has gone to Brad Stevens and said
"you have Amazon money now, do whatever you want".
If that means paying a $400M tax bill? No problem. If that means paying a $400M tax bill for multiple years? Sounds good. The only thing that should be impacting what the Celtics roster looks like moving forward is the brain of Brad Stevens, never money. That's my dream for this sale.
Unfortunately, it appears that dream is already dead. That certainly was quick
Alright, who's lying. Is this Bezos trying to be coy and this is exactly what someone would say who is interested in purchasing the Celtics? I mean, wasn't there a story about how Bezos cashed in around $6B in stock a few weeks ago? I'm not imagining that right? Seems to line up with the rumored Celts sale price ($6B) that the league wanted, but I've long said I'm not a big math guy. Maybe that's just a coincidence and he's really not interested. I feel like this is always something you deny first (probably while you're getting your ducks in a row) and then it comes out later.
Or, was this all bullshit?
I'm not going to try and suggest I have any idea who's lying, but what I do know is someone is full of shit and I'd like to know who it is. I'm just sitting here trying to make sense of this entire thing. One minute John Henry and FSG are interested, then the next minute they're out (thank you Jesus)
At least that news brought some relief. Then the next minute it's now Jeff Bezos who's going to drop his nuts on the table and buy the team, and in the blink of an eye, now he's out too. For crying out loud..

Listen, I'm not going to tell Wyc what to do with his (his Dad's) team, but I do know the season starts in basically two months. I'd prefer if this wasn't a distraction that bled into the season as the team attempts to repeat as champions, but that's just me. I'm sure there's a complicated process and all that shit, but all I'm asking for is an announcement of who you've chosen. Take all the time after that you need to figure out the logistics, but I need a name at this point.
The good news is, with all of these guys apparently dropping out, it only increases the chances that things stay in-house with Pags. To me, that feels like the best-case scenario but only as long as Pags is open and willing to cut the checks needed to keep this train moving. Above all else, that's the most important thing. And while he may not have Bezos money, he should still be able to find a way to make it work ($3.8B).
Now that FSG is out and Bezos is apparently out, who do we think is next? Can I start the "KG is potentially interested" rumor? That'd be fantastic. We know KG's interested after he tried to put together a group to buy the Wolves, so I say let Pierce chip in a little bit for a couple of shares, and together I trust them to run this team the right way.
