Just Because You're Blind And Have Weird Eyes Doesn't Mean You Can See The Future

NY Post - It’s the end of the world as we know it — or is it?

Baba Vanga, also known as Vangeliya Pandeva Gushterova, was a blind Bulgarian clairvoyant widely known for her alleged powers of precognition.

The so-called Nostradamus of the Balkans, a reference to the famed French astrologer, is said to have predicted 9/11 and the war in Ukraine, per the Sun.

The mystic healer died in 1996, but the psychic’s followers still await some of the predictions she made before her death.

Meet Baba Vanga. She's dead. But she used to be a real live blind person. Baba Vanga grew up in the city of Strumica, which nowadays is a municipality in the country of North Macedonia. But when Baba was born, it was a part of the Ottoman Empire, which to most people is "something we learned about in high school who played a role in World War 1 but we're not sure exactly what."

Baba was pre-mature baby who had a whole mess of health complications as a child. But she wasn't born blind. She saw perfectly fine for 12 years of her life. But as fate would have in, in 1923 Baba Vanga was sucked up by a giant tornado and thrown into a field. When the villagers found her, her eyes were full of sand and dirt. So much sand and dirt the she went blind and her eyes looked like this.

So naturally, since Baba Vanga was a sickly young girl with what can only be described as "fucked up eyes", the villagers came to the conclusion that she was had mystical healing powers and could predict the future. Apparently that's all it takes for most people. They see one weird eyed blind woman speaking in a shaky voice about a "dark future" and instantly jump to clairvoyant. But fine. I'll bite. There's a very large contingent of people who insist that Baba Vanga has predicted dozens of terribly tragic world events. According to Wikipedia, she's predicted:

  • World War II
  • The break-up of the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia
  • The Chernobyl disaster
  • The date of Stalin's death
  • The date of Tsar Boris III's death
  • The date of her own death[22]
  • The sinking of the Russian submarine Kursk
  • Princess Diana's death
  • 1985 Northern Bulgaria earthquake[26]
  • The September 11 attacks
  • 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami
  • ¨C11C

Ok Baba. Not bad. So how exactly did she make these predictions? When did she make them? What did she say? I'm sure there's some evidence to back these predictions up.

History - However, making a precise assessment of her talents is tricky, since many of the predictions attributed to her are based on second-hand accounts that are difficult to verify.

Economic Times - It's essential to note that while Baba Vanga's predictions are captivating, there's no concrete evidence documenting her alleged prophecies.

Jerusalem Post - Though her predictions were never fully written down, and many dispute the predictions accredited to her

Nope nothing. Look up any article on the life and predictions of the great Baba Vanga, and every one comes with some, "It's important to note that literally nobody has ever verified a single thing this bitch has said", type of disclaimer.

There are however some people who say they have heard her claims. And through word of mouth, there are a handful of quotes attributed to her. Quotes that if you ask me, only further prove how much of a fraud Ms. Vanga is.

Even the best most believe prediction of hers that I've seen. The one that comes closest to making me think, "ok maybe she was onto something here", is still pretty sketchy. There's a quote attributed to her from 1989. Baba Vanga ALLEGEDLY (and I can't stress the alleged part enough) was heard saying,

History - "Horror! Horror! The American brethren will fall after being attacked by the steel birds. The wolves will be howling in a bush, and innocent blood will be gushing."

Ok fine. That's a decent one. Even though she didn't predict a date, and that quote could really be applied to any war that involved planes and America. So as long as America was involved in any sort of war or plane related terrorist attack between 1989 until the end of the time she was going to be right. But still.. Steel birds attacking America. The use of the word "bush" (i.e. George Bush). Then 9/11 happens just over a decade later. That's pretty good.

Except then you look at her Chernobyl prediction. Baba Vanga allegedly said, "A huge bird will fall in Ukraine and the world will weep."

Of course people think the "huge bird" symbolizes the nuclear reactors. Another brilliant prediction from Baba Vanga. It really is a fantastic grift. She simply made dark, cryptic claims about birds, and whenever something bad happened, all of her believers did the necessary mental gymnastics to make her weird indistinct quote apply to the disaster.

So many of her other "accurate predictions" are bullshit as well. For example…She's given credit for predicting that the internet would eventually be weaponized and used for bad things. No shit Baba. Who couldn't have seen that coming? She predicted that there would be a pandemic someday. Then when COVID hit everyone credited her for seeing it coming. She said there would be an economic crisis. Obviously there's going to be an economic crisis. There's a new one somewhere every day. I'd like personally go on the record right now and say that AI technology will lead to something nefarious one day. So when that inevitably happens, I'd like people to consider me a clairvoyant.

But I digress. Everything you can find about Baba Vanga's predictions have zero backing. Just a bunch of people making baseless claims. To her credit, her grift worked wonders. She used to have hundreds of people lined up at her door on a regular basis to ask her questions about the future. To the point that scientists and researchers across the world would travel to meet with her. But guess what happened when they tried to run actual studies to test her psychic abilities? The Bulgarian government stepped in and refused to allow the studies to take place. Nobody ever was able to run real studies to really put her abilities to the test. Wonder why that is…

But I digress even more. Honestly, I have bit off more than I can chew with this blog. The tales of Baba Vanga's psychic abilities run so deep. Yet still, I haven't come across a single quote or prediction, other than MAYBE the 9/11 one that made me think, "Ok this woman actually might see the future." And even if she nailed her 9/11 prediction.. if you spend your whole life sitting in a dark room predicting shit, eventually you're going to hit. Did you know Baba Vanga also predicted that Barack Obama would be our last President? Missed on that one blindy. And now Baba Vanga is in the news again for predicting that "The end times will commence" in 2025. What does "commence" even mean? I could argue that the end times "commenced" the minute humans came into existence. You can spin zone that word in a million different directions.

And for the record, here are the a list of the upcoming predictions Baba Vanga had made before she passed away in 1996 (according to the NY Post).

2025: A conflict in Europe will devastate the continent’s population.

2028: Humans will begin to explore Venus as an energy source.

2033: The polar ice caps will melt, raising sea levels to drastic heights worldwide.

2076: Communism will spread to countries across the world.

2130: Humans will make alien contact.

2170: A drought will devastate much of the world.

3005: Earth will go to war with a civilization on Mars.

3797: Humans will have to vacate the Earth because it’s become uninhabitable.

5079: The world will end.

Everybody remember this list. I'm sure something will happen in Europe next year that people will be able to spin in a way that makes Baba Vanga look like she was right once again. The polar ice caps are already melting, so I'm sure they'll be able to spin that one too. BUT if we aren't using Venus as an energy source in 2028, I better see it reported that Baba Vanga fucked up. We need to start holding her accountable.

Just because you're blind and have weird eyes doesn't mean you see the future. It simply means your other 4 senses are slightly heightened, and you're automatically good at piano.
