WHAT THE FUCK: The Atlanta Falcons Draft Michael Penix Jr. No. 8 Overall

It takes a lot to genuinely shock me. I've more or less seen it all, particularly when it comes to the Atlanta Falcons. With that said, I don't remember the last time I was as stunned as I am right now.

The Falcons drafted a 24-year-old quarterback with four season-ending injuries on his college résumé No. 8 overall in the same offseason they gave another quarterback $180 million over four years in free agency. Steven Cheah told me this was happening a couple minutes before Roger Goodell read the pick and I didn't even entertain it as possibly being true because it was literally not within the realm of possibility until it somehow happened.

It's not even that I think Penix is going to suck or anything — though I'm certainly not convinced he's going to be a franchise quarterback — but 1) you don't take him eighth overall when you have positions of need on a team that's trying to win the NFC South next year and 2) if you were so hellbent on taking this guy, you could have traded down and gotten him 10 picks later. This is madness.

Michael Penix better be at minimum the second-best QB in this class and even at that, I'm not sure this pick becomes overly defensible. I really have no idea what to say. How is this real?
