Alabama Fans Flocked to Nick Saban's Statue to Leave Gifts Like He Died

I don't know that there's anything Alabama fans could have necessarily done to prepare themselves for the inevitable day when Nick Saban retired, but I don't think I expected a vigil at his statue like he just passed away. The guy is simply not coaching football anymore after working into his 70s and people flocked to campus to create an Oatmeal Creme Pie shrine.

This is obviously remarkably dumb and hilarious, but it's also why there will never be a sport as incredible as college football. A coach retired and an entire state is treating it like a death in their own family — I'm sure many Alabama fans would have actually traded the lives of most of their family members for Saban to coach another three years, honestly.

The good news is that Coach Saban is still alive and well and now has plenty of time to enjoy all those Oatmeal Creme Pies that were so graciously left for his likeness in front of Bryant-Denny Stadium. I hope someone has rounded up those boxes and delivered them to his house. Unfortunately for Bama fans, though, he's done working.

And it would be a real shame if nobody out there wanted to follow the best to ever do it and this coaching search went off the rails a little bit.
