Billy Donovan Had To Confirm That He Is In Fact NOT 'Trilly Donovan', The Unknown Man Who Breaks All The News In College Basketball

If you're a college basketball fan you likely know who Trilly Donovan is. The man on Twitter who breaks all the portal news, coaching news, everything like that well before everyone else. The problem is, no one knows who the hell he is. People have guessed. People have hypotheticals, but he's never once gave a clue about who he is.

That's until today, when he did his first interview with The Athletic. More importantly we can cross one name off the list. Billy Donovan.

[Source] - “I don’t know anything about it,” said Donovan, the former Florida Gators and current Chicago Bulls coach. “Certainly I’m not doing it, I’ll tell you that. I appreciate him being a fan of me.”

I was honestly hoping it was Billy Donovan, would be way more enjoyable if an NBA head coach was spending his offseason tracking portal news. Just hopping onto Twitter to announce that Rick Pitino landed another transfer before walking into practice would be incredible. But it's not. We do have these details about him now though:

Trilly did provide the following biographical info: He works in college basketball, he’s 32, married, no kids and lives somewhere out East. That’s the extent of what he’ll reveal. Even in an interview setting, he will not say his first name. He will say he’s not an agent. He’s not a reporter. He’s not a coach.

Okay, so that makes sense in terms of how he gets the news. But the fact that this guy is able to fly under the radar without anyone figuring out who he is makes him awesome for me. Yeah I know I'm a nerd who follows the portal, tries to track teams and rosters, so he's valuable. But, again, we're talking the Internet in 2023. Someone found out where Tiffany Gomas lived and had her house picture all over the place. We can't figure out the identity of one man?

I love how he decided to start tweeting out news too:

Then the group chat would be discussing gossip that wasn’t public yet. “All of us are sort of in a position where we’re privy to some information that the general public doesn’t have,” he said. They’d eventually see tweets from insiders like Jon Rothstein and Jeff Goodman related to their conversations, and …

“Eventually, it got to the point where I was like, all right, well, I’m just gonna start putting this stuff out there,” Trilly said.

Incredible. Oh these guys are tweeting out the news we have? Not anymore! Remember, this is the man who broke the Chris Beard getting fired news. This is the man who breaks all the transfer portal stuff and uses a simple gif to send fans into hysteria. It's a great bit. Part of me wants to figure out who the hell this man is, but I also hope we never find out. I just want him to break all the news.
