New York Wants To Create A Netflix Tax To Give More Funding To The Dogshit Subway System

New York Post — Netflix could get a whole new premium.

Albany lawmakers in the Assembly have floated potentially hitting streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and HBO Max with the state’s sales tax as one way to fund the cash-strapped Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The plan would hit streamers with the 4% surcharge, potentially netting $100 million annually for the state’s coffers, the Assembly’s budget proposal predicts, putting a new + on bills for everything from AppleTV+ to Paramount+.

The MTA needs $600 million this year and at least $1.2 billion next year to balance its books in large part because of the ridership drop-off following the COVID-19 pandemic.

That dollar figure includes an assumption the MTA hikes transit fares to an estimated $2.90 per swipe this year — with another fare increase set for 2025.

Every time I tap my credit card to get on the New York City subway, I think, "This thing is so clean, effective and safe that I'm shocked it doesn't cost more. I'd be willing to pay significantly more for the privilege of riding on this train with the guy screaming and pissing in the corner."

Well thank goodness some New York politicians finally listened to what the people want, because we will soon get a fare increase AND a new tax on every streaming service you use! It's about time! I've always said there aren't enough taxes in New York, especially given all the great things you get from the government, such as the immaculate public transportation experience or the trash-lined streets. This is long overdue.

I, for one, don't think the proposed 4 percent tax is enough. I'll pay a pretty penny to keep the subway in its current pristine condition.

Nobody likes giving the government more money. But when you have something as good as the MTA, you have to be willing to keep it running smoothly!
