The Padres Just Keep Spending Money As They Ink Yu Darvish To A 6-Year, $108 Million Extension

Don't tell San Diego they aren't supposed to spend with the big boys in the offseason because they just jeep opening that checkbook. After signing Yu Darvish to a 6-year extension worth $108 million, they have now spent just over $512 million this offseason according to Sportrac.com.

The little ole Padres just keep spending and spending and spending and I love it. Obviously their big deal of the offseason was Xander to round out their infield and now they have Darvish locked up until he is 42 years old. That is quiiiiiiite a risky deal if you ask me. Now it is a good sign that his velo has actually gone up since he turned 35, but how long will that hold up?

After a rough couple of seasons he did bounce back last year with a really solid season, 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA, 30 starts, 197 Ks in 194.2 IP and a 0.950 WHIP. Guy's been a really good pitcher for a long time, but he is getting up there in age. Having a bunch of studs on your side will def help him out though, Manny Machado, Juan Soto, Fernando Tatis Jr. Xander, who wouldn't want to pitch with them behind you? Maybe what's more impressive if this is Darvish's third six-year deal of his career. Not many other players can say they've done that.

Padres have the third highest payroll in baseball and it looks like they just don't give a shit. They just want to win. They're adding via trades, free agency, and extending their own guys. They just want to catch the Dodgers in the standings, they won't rest until they do. Get ready for another year of absolute rock fights between the Pads and Dodgers.
