Sometimes in this business, a story comes along that you first start to talk about, then get caught up in, and then ultimately it consumes you. In the way Watergate took over the lives and careers of Woodward and Bernstein. Or the Boston Archdiocese pedophilia did the Boston Globe staff in Spotlight. And the sordid tale of LaVergne, Tennessee police officer Maegan Hall is in the process of doing that very thing to this intrepid reporter. From it's humble origins way back in early January:

Source - The Tennessee police chief overlooking the investigation of romp cop Maegan Hall was fired on Monday after an outside investigator determined he knew about her sex spree with several officers.
La Vergne Police Chief Burrel 'Chip' Davis covered up Hall's sexual misconduct with six officers while simply telling her not to 'dip your pen in company ink,' according to a recording obtained by DailyMail.com.
A third-party investigator hired to look into how much Davis knew about the steamy romps concluded he prevented an initial investigation and failed to discipline or report the officers involved. …
It is unclear when Davis found out about the steamy romps but Hall claimed he created an environment that encouraged the behavior. …
Throughout the investigation, Davis contributed to the findings but was never named as a participant in the scandal. While it is unknown when Davis was informed about the sexual misconduct, the former police chief acted ‘shocked’ when the formal investigation occurred [and] they touched upon everything from games of 'strip Uno' to foot fetish photos and wife-swapping sessions.
None of us know this former Chief Burrell Davis. But it's hard not to feel bad for old Chip. We're just conditioned to believe that running a police force is an impossible task. One that involves enormous responsibility. Caught in between the local government and the rank-and-file. Not quite a politician. But no longer just a cop, either. Needing everyone's respect while taking their abuse. It's a bit of an oxymoron, in that you're on your own, and yet answerable to everyone.
Maybe it's just the way the police chief is always portrayed in movies. Chief Brody taking a slap in the face from a grieving mother because the Mayor of Amity forced him to reopen the beaches. Commissioner Gordon, surrounded by corruption and having to partner with a masked Dark Knight in the battle for Gotham's soul. Commandant Lassard having to put up with the madcap hijinks of Mahoney, Hightower and Tackleberry. Running a law enforcement department is a job only for a strong individual with an iron will, even in the best of circumstances.
And it would appear the best circumstances in the LaVergne PD were enjoyed by everybody but our guy Chip Davis. For the officers he supervised, every day was games of Strip UNO, arranging after work three-ways and Maegan Hall blowbangs while on duty. But he was in charge. And even his metaphors about pens and inkwells - which was the "Don't shit where you eat" of a simpler, more civilized time - couldn't stop Maegan's insatiable sexual appetite or save his job.
So let's all try to think about our bosses before we start lining up naked hot tub parties and swingers orgies with our coworkers. It's one thing to risk your career, paycheck, health benefits and pension. It's another thing entirely when your sexcapades destroy the brilliant career of you superior officer. Who, unlike you, never even got a blowie out of it for his troubles.
Godspeed in all your future endeavors, Chip Davis. You deserved better.
