After A Dropping His First 50 Bomb Of The Season, Jayson Tatum Officially Passed Larry Bird For The Most 50 Point Games In Celtics History

On the road, playing at a weird start time, facing a team you just played two days prior, these are the type of games where you need your superstar player to wake up, decide he's going to put his teammates on his back and carry his team to a 7th straight win. After a nice little 33/9/6 performance on Saturday night, I think we all were hoping for something similar this time around.

Well, we were treated to something a whole lot better.

I live by the very simple rule where if you do something in a Celtics uniform that puts you in a sentence with Larry Bird, it's a very big deal. No player has done that more these last few years than Jayson Tatum

Let's just take a second and digest what we just watched/read.

In the history of the Boston Celtics, with all their legends and HOFers, nobody, and I legitimately mean nobody has had more 50 point games than Jayson Tatum. Think about that for a second. You pass Larry Bird in anything and it's a very big deal. My entire life has been built around the fact that Larry Bird is a God. That what he did on the basketball court was unlike anything Celtics fans had and would ever see again. Sorry, it might be time to accept that Jayson Tatum is becoming a generational Celtic

I don't give a shit about the style of play or eras or any of that shit. That Bird record lived through a lot of modern basketball until Jayson Tatum, showed up in my opinion dropping 50 is dropping 50.

The last time we saw Tatum break the 50 point plateau was on March 6th, 2022 against the Nets (54 points), so you could make the case he was due. He hit 49 a few months ago and watching this performance you knew once he saw that three ball go in that 50 was in play. I've lived through enough of those Tatum zones where I know it when I see it and when he's locked in there truly isn't a more devastating offensive force in the league right now. When you pair that with a Hornets defense that isn't all that good, that's how you get 51 on your head.

Earlier today I stated that Jokic is my MVP leader, and I stand by that….for the moment. Tatum keeps playing like this as the best player on the best team with these sort of numbers, he'll for sure re-enter the conversation. When it comes to Tatum, what I care about is the win. Things got tight late until Tatum decided enough was enough, the Celts avoided the letdown early afternoon game curse and are up to 7 in a row and 4.5 up on BKN in the 2 spot. That's what matters.

Still a monster 50 bomb though. I can only imagine what Tatum finishes with and there's a real chance nobody ever catches him.

P.S.

Can't mention Larry Bird and not post the best video on the internet. A legend for sure, but no longer the 50 point champ. Life comes at you fast.
