RIP Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac - Dead At 79
Rest in peace to the absolute icon that was Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac, who unfortunately passed away this morning at 79 years old following a short illness, according to her reps.
Christine was a truly brilliant and underrated singer/songwriter/keyboard player who first worked with Fleetwood Mac on their second album ('Mr. Wonderful') as a session musician and then later joined the band after marrying bassist John McVie in 1968 (they would divorce in 1976). She'd go on to write/sing some of the band's biggest hits during her first nearly thirty year run with the band - including 'Everywhere', 'Songbird', 'You Make Loving Fun', 'Say You Love Me', and 'Over My Head' - and she inspired/contributed to plenty more.
She even wrote 'Don't Stop', which features one of the greatest driving piano parts in all of rock n' roll if you're askin me....
Christine left the band in 1998 and then rejoined Fleetwood Mac in 2014 for a few final tours, one of which I was lucky enough to attend with Rone at Madison Square Garden right before the pandemic struck, and McVie totally shined as a performer from behind her keyboard all night. She was still able to make you FEEL the lyrics she wrote back in the 70s with her voice. It was amazing.
Just an absolute icon through-and-through that injected a whole lot of heart and soul into Fleetwood Mac over the years.
Fleetwood Mac put out a joint statement, which can be seen above, and fans and artists alike are already starting to pay tribute all over their social media feeds as you would expect. Condolences to McVie's friends/family/bandmates/fans - this is a sad day for music.
