SOUND THE TRUMPETS, EDWIN DIAZ IS RETURNING TO THE METS ON A 5 YEAR, $102 MILLION DEAL
TIMMY, PLAY THAT MOTHERFUCKING BEAUTIFUL SONG!!!
So there it is folks. The first big free agent of the 2022 Mets has signed before the market even opened and he ain't going nowhere. You know why? Because the Mets have the richest owner in sports that made $102 million in interest since you started reading this blog. Uncle Stevie wanted Edwin Diaz to stay a Met, Edwin Diaz wanted to stay a Met, and that's why Edwin Diaz is a Met. If another player leaves the Mets, it will not be because of money as long as Steve Cohen is owner.
God damn that's a hell of a way to begin the offseason. I couldn't care less about Diaz being the highest paid reliever in MLB history, having a no trade clause, or opt outs at any point. You know why? Because Edwin Diaz did something no Met has ever done in my lifetime: Made the 9th inning a happy place.
Once those trumpets sounded, you knew the Mets were in good hands and felt like they could win the game, which is the opposite for pretty much every other closer in my life (Billy Wagner was good but he still horrified me in big spots). Diaz earned every single one of those bonuses and as long as Rob Manfred doesn't change the baseballs again without telling anyone like he did in 2019, everything should be fine. That's a big IF because Rob Manfred is about as big a motherfucker as you get. Plus again, money isn't an object when your team is owned by a real life Bobby Axe.

Now let's keep that mojo and money flowing Uncle Stevie. Give Jacob deGrom a blank check, bring back Nimmo as long as Scott Boras doesn't try to bend you over a barrel, and do whatever you want with the rest. I don't know what the 2023 Mets are going to look like. But it's nice to know the 9th inning shouldn't be a house of horrors anymore. Or at least next year. At least give me that Edwin, because 5 years is an eternity for a closer.
Actually you know what? We aren't worrying about 2028 or even tomorrow since the world can be over by then. Instead let's get some caviar out and welcome back our ninth inning nuclear weapon!
Oh yeah and buy a shirt because EdWIN ain't going anywhere any time soon.
We did a preview of free agency on our last We Gotta Believe of the season and I'm sure we'll fire off some more episodes once everything gets cooking.
