Lady Bird, Uncut Gems, and Other Weird A24 Movies Currently On Streaming
The trailer for a new A24 movie, "X", dropped earlier today. So why not take a look at what's streaming from everyone's favorite entertainment company!
1. Lady Bird - Netflix - 96/100
A California high school student plans to escape from her family and small town by going to college in New York, much to the disapproval of wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mother.
There are 3 things that make this movie great. The first is the performances of both Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf. The second is the time period. It's one of the first newer movies I've seen that actually grabs early 2000s time period correctly. The last is the fact that Lady Bird is what every teenager is: an asshole! The movie doesn't do that cliché, misunderstood kid with a heart of gold shit. Ladybird is just a straight up dickhead and they make sure you recognize that.
2. The Farewell - Prime Video - 96/100
A headstrong Chinese-American woman returns to China when her beloved grandmother is given a terminal diagnosis. Billi struggles with her family's decision to keep grandma in the dark about her own illness as they all stage an impromptu wedding to see grandma one last time.
This is the movie that redeemed Awkwafina in my mind. Before this, I viewed her as one of those gimmicky rapper personalities that was just not my thing. But man, she crushed this movie in a perfectly understated way. Great humor, really sad moments and awesome performances across the board.
3. The Florida Project - Netflix - 94/100
The story of a precocious six year-old and her ragtag group of friends whose summer break is filled with childhood wonder, possibility and a sense of adventure while the adults around them struggle with hard times.
Man, this movie is REAL. Sean Baker is a director that does a great job diving in and authentically showing parts of our society that are completely forgotten. Brooklyn Prince gives one of the best kid actor performances I have ever seen, and Willem Dafoe gives one of his career best as well.
4. Uncut Gems - Netflix - 90/100
A charismatic New York City jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime. Howard must perform a precarious high-wire act, balancing business, family, and encroaching adversaries on all sides in his relentless pursuit of the ultimate win.
Another movie absolutely destroys you with anxiety, this one does it way more kinetically than Midsommar. It's kind of polarizing in it's reception, but I think there is for sure an audience of you that will love it if you haven't already seen it.
5. Good Time - Netflix - 90/100
After a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother in prison, Connie Nikas embarks on a twisted odyssey through New York City's underworld to get his brother Nick out of jail.
This is from the same directors that made Uncut Gems, and it similarly rocks and takes you through the crime-ridden underbelly of New York City. It also was proof positive to me that Robert Pattinson was so much more than just the Twilight Guy or the really bad 9/11 movie guy.
6. The Disaster Artist - Netflix - 89/100
An aspiring actor in Hollywood meets an enigmatic stranger by the name of Tommy Wiseau, the meeting leads the actor down a path nobody could have predicted; creating the worst movie ever made.
You might think that you need to watch 'The Room' in order to watch this movie. Well, i disagree. Just watch the clip below and you will be ready to go.
It is a hilarious movie filled with very funny performances. It perfectly captures the pure weirdness of Tommy Wiseau and the weird group of characters he worked with.
7. The Lighthouse - Prime Video - 88/100
Two lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.
This is easily the most A24 movie on this list. Plenty of people that watched it found it pretentious, to artsy, etc. Personally, I found it amazing. It's fucking weird as hell, has a lot of really funny moments, and has 2 of my favorite performances of 2019. I highly recommend taking the leap and enjoying this dudes rock movie in artsy makeup.
