Fenway Sports Group Just Dropped $900 MILLION To Buy The Pittsburgh Penguins

A question for Red Sox fans out there? Would you rather have Fenway Sports Group pay $365M for Mookie Betts or $900M for the Pittsburgh Penguins? One player or just wait and save and buy an entire organization? Now the Red Sox fans get to root for Crosby and Malkin these next few years. That's how it works, right?

Pretty good ROI for Mario Lemieux. His group bought the Pens about 22 years ago for a purchase price of a reported $107M. A couple decades later after three Stanley Cups, a generational super star, and a beautiful new publicly financed stadium he exits with $900M. It is crazy that at least part of the motivation for Lemieux to buy the team was just recover the $24M of back salary that the Penguins owed him.

He got that money back, clearly, and the city of Pittsburgh owes him forever. That team was bankrupt. It was in jeopardy of either being liquidated or being forced to move town. Now it is one of the premier franchises in the league and a source of pride for the renaissance of Pittsburgh. They owe Mario forever.

Talk about selling at the top of the market. Hard times are coming for the Pens when Sid and Geno retire. I am very excited to see another city complain about John Henry and Lebron James.
