Daily Star – He now lives in a flat in Barcelona and flies every morning to his job in London. And Sam said he has more cash in his pocket plus great Spanish food, weather and beaches. He said: “I started looking at getting my own place and realised it was just never going to happen in London. “I daydreamed, idly looking at what I could get in Barcelona for the price of a London flat – and ended up deciding it was actually the most logical approach. “I’m living in a newly renovated two-bed flat to myself, with a roof terrace. It’s right in the centre of town in the historic Gothic quarter, so I pretty much walk to everything. “I moved mainly for the hugely improved lifestyle I have here, but in reality it’s now working out that I’m actually saving money on my previous London life.” Sam is now paying £570-a-month for his apartment. The social media manager spends around £80-a-day on return flights to get into work each day. He told the Daily Mirror: “It’s really just a complete lifestyle change, and so much for the better. “I can go for a run along the beach before work, escape down the coast at the weekends, have amazing restaurants right on my doorstep, and the cost of pretty much everything is a fraction of London.” It comes after a study showed living in Madrid and flying back to work in London would be cheaper than renting a flat in the capital. The research found a Londoner would be £403 a month or £4,836 a year better off if they moved to the Spanish capital and commuted back. The figures based on someone travelling to work four days a week showed an average one-bedroom flat in Camden, north London, costs £1,893 a month to rent plus council tax and travel costs. But a flat in Madrid would cost £532 a month — and there would be no council tax.

To put this all in a little context – Barcelona is about 700 miles from London, if we’re talking direct distance. Roughly the same distance from New York to Chicago. A flight is 2 hours and 10 minutes every each way.

So, your commute definitely sucks. 4+ hours on a plane ever day is certainly not fun. But the fact that the money isnt even close is bananas. Saving $625 a month by living 1,400 miles away from your place of employment just doesnt make any goddam sense. Thats how you know shit is completely fucking backwards and exorbitantly expensive in your city. Its like when you hear how during a playoff series it would be cheaper to get a ticket, hotel, and flight in the opposing city than to just buy a ticket at MSG…except its your entire life. Every day.

And on top of saving all that money you get to live in beautiful Barcelona instead of dreary ass London. Warm weather, amazing beaches, delicious food, and the finest women all speaking French. Spain! What a country!

I guess the only drawback is you have to be the asshole loser who lives 700 miles away from work. Tough to go out after work for drinks and take a chick back to your place huh? But the flipside is that you never ever ever ever have to hang out with your coworkers because if they ever ask you to do something after work you can be like “Nah, sorry, I gotta FLY SEVEN HUNDRED MILES HOME.” At the end of the day living on the beach in Barcelona with 7,500 extra dollars in your pocket and not living with those rotten teeth limey fucks is a win. Plus the frequent flyer miles must be insane. Guy probably can go on an incredible vacation for free like 5 times a year.
