The Braves Are Reportedly Calling Up Spencer Strider, Who Started This Season in Low-A and Could End Up on the Postseason Roster

Wow.

Spencer Strider was the Braves' fourth round draft pick out of Clemson in 2020. He didn't pitch at all in 2019 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and only threw 12 innings for the Tigers in 2020 before everything was shut down — and there was of course no Minor League Baseball last season. So coming into his first professional season in 2021, he had barely pitched in a game at all in three years.

All he's done so far this year is make his way from Low-A Augusta to Triple-A Gwinnett with a 3.64 ERA across his four stops and an MiLB-leading 14 K/9. Now, he'll reportedly go all the way up to the Big Leagues in his first professional season.

Strider could just be used to make a spot start in one of Atlanta's final three games against the Mets to give somebody extra rest heading into the Postseason, but there actually is a possibility Strider could end up playing playoff baseball for the Braves.

Sign me up. Strider has struck out 153 hitters in 94 innings this season. If it comes down to him or someone like Drew Smyly for the final bullpen spot in the Postseason — if MLB even allows him to be on the roster — why not?

Strider touches 100 MPH with relative ease.

Regardless of whether or not he ends up pitching in the Postseason, Strider going from Low-A to the Major Leagues in his first pro season is an unreal accomplishment. We'll see what kind of stuff he has this weekend.
