The New Trailer For "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" Just Came Out And It Looks...Confusing

I didn’t hate the first “Venom.” I acknowledge it’s not a particularly well-made movie, but there were enough things in it that made me think that you could build off of it. Tom Hardy gave a pretty good, pretty committed performance. I liked some of the effects. It wasn’t high art, but I was genuinely interested in seeing a sequel. I don’t know if “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” is going to be a good movie. I’m not smart enough to predict the future. I hope it's great. I like the people attached to it. I’d watch Woody Harrelson in almost anything, but after watching 2 trailers for this movie now, I just…don’t really get it. I’m not super well-versed in the comic book world necessarily, but I know that 1 of the big reasons people like Venom and especially Carnage is because they are 2 of the darker villains in comic book lore, but this thing kind a looks like a CBS sitcom. The Eddie Brock/Venom dynamic in this trailer feels like it should have a laugh track attached to it. I understand a film of this magnitude needs to have its moments of levity but man, I’m just really put off by the tone of this thing. Movies like “Deadpool” and “Logan” have paved the way for ultra violent comic book cinema. If there’s ever a time to a make a crazy, ultra violent Venom movie, it would be now. The guy’s superpower is literally to eat people, and one of the running gags in this trailer is that he no longer eats people. I hope this movie is really good. I like a lot of the people in it, but I continue to be a little baffled by the tone. I’m rooting for it. The movie is directed by Andy Serkis, who is one of my favorite actors working, but he’s never made a film of this scale before. I don’t know, maybe it’ll be good, but this trailer doesn’t do much for me.
