Trey Mancini Getting A Standing Ovation In Camden Yards For The Birds Opening Day Is The Best Thing You'll See Today
Goosebump City, population me. Watching Trey Mancini get announced to the Opening Day crowd in Baltimore was awesome. You know the story by now and should be able to recognize how special this is for him. It was awesome to see the reaction and recognition he got last week in Boston on Opening Day, but back home in Baltimore was special. He means so much to the city and the fans, more than he'll ever know. I'm very lucky to be able to call Trey a friend and I couldn't be happier for him, his girlfriend Sara, and his family as he took the field today. Stage III colon cancer at 27 isn't an easy hurdle, not only did he beat the cancer, he made it back for Opening Day which is something he told us that he didn't know if he would be able to do. Chemotherapy is not something anyone should have to do, let alone 27 year-olds, but he was able to finish the chemo, report on time to Spring Training, not miss a beat, and is an everyday player.
The crowd for him was awesome, the 25% capacity let him hear it and I bet there wasn't a dry eye in the house, because there wasn't in my house. I thought he would have been announced last to let the crowd really give it to him but I get it, announce the batting order. Baseball is better with Trey Mancini in a uniform playing first base. I do love how Trey kind of turned around and tried to get the ceremony moving, nah buddy. You're getting that standing O and this thing is gonna go for a while.
The ovation got louder for his first at-bat in the bottom of the first. More fans had made their way into the ballpark and it was LOUD. Just like it should have been. Shoutout to Christian Vasquez for stepping out and letting the crowd go and go. I won't get tired of this comeback story, it's such a special moment for Trey and his family. What an emotional day for 16. Doesn't matter if he bats .350 or .150, he's already got comeback player of the year wrapped up. Welcome back Trey.
