The First Trailer For ‘Cruella’ Is Here And Emma Stone Is PG-13 Harley Quinn?

“In 1970s London, young fashion designer Estella de Vil becomes obsessed with dogs' skins, especially Dalmatians, until she eventually becomes a ruthless and terrifying legend known as Cruella.”

As a fan of the original animated movie and of Emma Stone, I really like this pairing. I go into any of these Disney live-action joints with a tad bit of pessimism since they are, by and large, fairly hollow attempts to grab our money by playing on nostalgia. For those of you that know me, you know my stance on remakes and reboots has always been the same. If you have something original to add to the story and you think you can win the already uphill battle that these present, then go for it. To me, this trailer makes it looks like it is exactly that.

First off, Emma Stone was a phenomenal casting choice. Not only does she look that part but she can clearly act it as well. Also, she is pulling off the rare "American doing a British accent" performance which I love to see. From a stylistic standpoint, this looks like it is capturing that 70's London vibe well, which bodes extremely well for a crime comedy in my opinion. Adding on to that, I think director Craig Gillespie has proven with his last movie, 'I, Tonya', that he can do period-set, crime comedy well and clearly he knows how to use Stone to great effect. There is definitly reason for excitement between that and the great cast (PWH is both an absolute GEM of an actor and also a Barstool guy).

My issue after the trailer is this: I just feel like it sort of vibe-jacking Harley Quinn/The Joker and making it PG. 101 Dalmatians obviously pre-dates Harley Quinn(not the Joker, though) so this may not be fair, but I just couldn't help but shake that vibe throughout the entire trailer. The movie has a lot more working in it's favor than against it for now, though. There is a original story being told, an all-star actress in the lead with a great cast around her, and a director that knows what he is doing. What's not to love?
