BF – After she posted a nude selfie to protest victim blaming, [Australian writer Clementine] Ford received a torrent of messages and comments, including requests for more nude pictures, graphic threats of violence, sexist abuse, and sexually suggestive comments.

Ford took screenshots of the messages she was sent and posted them publicly. By doing this, she was deemed to have violated Facebook’s community standards and was handed a 30-day ban. Ford wrote on Facebook that the ban was so long because it was the fourth time she had been banned for similar activity.

A spokesperson for Facebook told BuzzFeed News they provide a number of page moderation tools to combat the kinds of messages and comments Ford received.

“We give page owners a wide range of tools to proactively moderate and control who contacts them. Page owners can set profanity filters, control who messages their page through the Privacy Settings, delete comments and block people who send unwanted messages,” they said.

Facebook told BuzzFeed News that temporary blocks are intended to be educational, rather than punishing.

“Our temporary blocks are not intended to punish people who have broken the rules, but to put them in a ‘time out’ phase during which they are provided with educational materials that explain how to use Facebook in compliance with our community standards and statement of rights and responsibilities,” a spokesperson told BuzzFeed News.

I’m not necessarily one of those guys who thinks that women have it so much tougher than guys online; if you’re in the limelight on social media to any degree, male or female, you get mean shit thrown your way, welcome to the Internet. But some dude saying she should sit on a butcher’s knife so she can’t reproduce is about as vicious and chick hating as you can get. I’ve got no doubt in my mind Clementine Ford would hate Barstool Australia — all dingo attack videos, big time rugby hits, and aboriginals giving handjobs outside liquor stores all the time — but you’ve got to be able to express an opinion online without some Internet weirdo talking about wanting to flay your genitals like a fish. For Facebook to not only turn a blind eye to the creepy harassment but also ban her for it? Absolutely hilarious in how much shit they’re going to get for it. Facebook’s stock’s might end up looking like Pres owns it by the end of it all if this story picks up some heat.

PS Here’s the original nude selfie that got Clementine Ford all the hate. It’s not like the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen in my life but the day I say a negative thing to any chick showing herself naked is the day I turn in my cock and balls to the police chief and get suspended from the force.
