Bob Costas Goes After ESPN for Giving Caitlyn Jenner an ESPY for Courage

“I wish Caitlyn all the happiness in the world and all the peace of mind in the world,” Costas said. “However, it strikes me that awarding the Arthur Ashe award to Caitlyn Jenner is just a crass exploitation play. It’s a tabloid play. In the broad world of sports, I’m pretty sure they could have found—and this is not anything against Caitlyn Jenner—I’m pretty sure they could have found someone who was much closer to actively involved in sports, who would have been deserving of what that award represents.

“That’s not to say that it doesn’t take some measure of personal courage to do what Caitlyn Jenner has done, but I think that every year we look across the landscape of sports, and we find prominent people and kids in high school and amateur athletes who I think more closely fit the description of what they’re looking for or should be looking for there. And I think this is a play to pump up audience the way lots of things are put on television, to attract eyeballs, not because of the validity, but because of whatever the kind of gawker factor is.”

Before I saw this video I was really hoping Costas was just going to go totally bigoted for once in his life. Like he was gonna slip up and say Caitlyn Jenner wasn’t courageous and that he doesn’t agree with her “lifestyle choice” or something. I though “maybe Bob is just soft as baby shit when it comes to guns or NFL mascots but a huge pre-op dick when it comes to transgendered people?” No dice though. Should have known better. Bob turns left more often than a NASCAR driver.

On to his hot take about how crass ESPN was. Bob… Bob… You’re giving the ESPY’s waaaaaay too much credit. They’re the fucking ESPY’s. They don’t matter at all. Points on Who’s Line is It Anyway matter just as much if not more than ESPY’s. Ryan gets 1000 points for using the pool noodle prop as a digeridoo, Wayne gets 10,000 points for being black and cool, Colin gets 0 points for insinuating he banged Drew’s mom, and Caitlyn Jenner gets a courage award from the ESPY’s. They’re all equal but Wayne gets to read the credits in a sing songy voice.

And of course ESPN is trying to grab some attention. That’s what they do. Otherwise they wouldn’t let maniacs like Skip Bayless yell at America every day. Honestly, calling them out is exactly what they want, Bob. Oooooh. The ESPY’s are crass. You got mousetrapped Bob. And now so did I. We’re all talking about the meaningless ESPY’s like they matter. I hope somebody farts on Bob’s pillow again.
