Mike Gundy Wants Players Back on Campus Because "They Have the Ability to Fight This Virus Off"

Listen, I want sports back just as much as the next guy. I haven't even allowed my brain to fully accept the possibility of there not being a college football season, because it will devastate me to my core. But everyone is well aware by now that is a distinct possibility.

And it is a possibility because we have a virus sweeping the country that is causing unprecedented damage up to and including thousands of deaths. So when that's happening, no matter what your thoughts are on the matter, you probably shouldn't say what Mike Gundy said here.

Gundy is a government employee who makes more than $5 million per year, while coaching student-athletes who make nothing, despite being the primary money-maker for an athletic department which brought in more than $88 million in 2018. So when you're in the position of being a multi-millionaire in charge of uncompensated student-athletes, saying, "They are 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22-years-old and they are healthy and they have the ability to fight this virus off," probably isn't what you want to be doing.

It's perfectly acceptable to urge the NCAA and universities to make sure every plan is being discussed to be prepared for if and when it's safe to resume playing sports. But advocating for the sequestration of uncompensated teenage athletes because "they have the ability to fight this virus off" is not a particularly great look from Gundy.

And to think this comes from a man whose most famous moment stems from him defending a player to the media. The irony ...
