Bruce Springsteen's Son Just Became A Jersey City Firefighter

From ABC7 News

The son of rock legend Bruce Springsteen is now a Jersey City firefighter.

Sam Springsteen, 26, was one of 15 new firefighters sworn in by Mayor Steven Fulop at City Hall Tuesday morning -- and The Boss on hand for the big day.

It was a family celebration, with mom Patti Scialfa and the rest of the crew watching on with pride to congratulate the graduate.

"This is my son's day, so I'm staying out of it," Bruce Springsteen said. "We're very proud. We're very proud...It was a long road. He was very dedicated for quite a few years, and we're just excited for him today."

Well, some people are born to run, others are born to blog, and a few of the extra-brave are born to fight fires. And if you're born in the U.S.A. you still have the chance to make your own way whether you have a famous dad or not. In this case, Sam's taking an exit off Thunder Road & strapping his hands across a fire engine about 90.8 miles north of the streets of Philadelphia, and across the river from New York in Jersey City.

It's not my hometown but I know a lot of my coworkers live there, and I'm glad people like Sam are tougher than the rest so they can look out for others in this concrete jungleland. If you're ever in that area and crash your pink Cadillac or find yourself saying, "I'm on fire," he might be the one to show up & help you out.

Anyways, you've gotta have a hungry heart to do that work day in & day out, but no doubt he'll make great friends there... Bet they'll go on lots of trips to Atlantic City on their days off & will someday sit back and enjoy these glory days.

Terrible, Kate. Truly.

But really though, congrats to Sam & all the other firefighters who got sworn in today. I know for many it's a lifelong dream & an exciting time.

* Cool other note on this - The first woman firefighter in Jersey City history (Constance Zapella) is a battalion chief now, and today her sister (Francesca Zapella) was among those sworn in with Sam's class. Lots of brothers serving on fire departments, but for Jersey City this is the first case of sisters.
