A Doctor Says That Calling Someone A "Nerd" or "Geek" Should Be A Hate Crime

NY POSTA British psychotherapist stirred up a social media squabble Thursday when she suggested on national TV that calling someone a “nerd” or “geek” should be considered a hate crime.

Dr. Sonja Falck, also a psychology lecturer at the University of East London, appeared on Good Morning Britain.

On the program, Falck suggested that ridiculing someone with those two terms — and others like “brainiac” and “egghead” — should have legal consequences.

“I think people find it startling because very high IQ people are a minority group in society who are very much ignored, they’re not understood and largely neglected,” she said. “It is the case that very high IQ people very often are bullied at school, for example. They’re a target for being bullied quite viciously.”

Sneaky one of my longest-running commentaries on the blog is how nerds and geeks rule the world. How the power dynamic has shifted and it's now the dweebs who are stuffing the jocks in lockers and upside down in toilets (figuratively of course): crushing the bros with their wallets and swirlying the meatheads in the salt water on the shore of the beach of their private island.

Nerd:

Dweeb:

Geek:

I just don't think these guys need their feelings protected by the law. If they're really hurt that bad by being called an egghead they can just buy new feelings,

And yeah those may be some extreme examples. But even on a small, everyday scale, people who accept and embrace their nerdiness and geekiness and dweebdom quickly find success:

20-30 years ago, this guy —

— would be bumped into walls and hung from the rafters by his underpants while the jocks and bullies like Willie Colon and Brandon Walker stuck his Star Wars figurines up his butt. Today, they scatter out of his way and say "excuse me sir" when they pass in the hallway, just hoping to get a retweet or a guest spot on his podcast or a cameo in one of his videos. Anyone in a relationship sees Robbie coming and literally sprints in the other direction before their girlfriend gets fucked.

He makes your girl call him "brainiac" when they bang on the basement beanbag chair in between Marvel movies.

To be fair, it's not like Dr. Falck has bad intentions. Even though she's sitting next to a (self-proclaimed) "geek" telling him how he should feel...her heart is in the right place. When you're 12 years old getting bullied in school for having glasses and doing math equations during recess, it's tough to shake it off because you'll be a billionaire in 25 years. But unless we're planning on pursuing middle-school children with hate crime charges, I think we can still rely on principals and teachers and parents to handle the discipline on that.

When it comes to adults, I think they're pretty secure with their personalities as we wait in line to buy all their products and beg them to transfer all of our money into their own personal bank accounts. Maybe don't trivialize the idea of hate crime and spend your time subscribing downloading and rating 5 stars instead.
