TRADE ALERT: Brendan Perlini Gets Dealt To The Red Wings

Brendan Perlini got his wish and is going to be on the next plane out of town. The former first round pick is now on his third team by the age of 24 which is typically not a good sign. I wish he got more of a chance here in Chicago. He has all the tools. Speed, size, good shot, etc. He just doesn’t use them all the time. Hopefully he can get his career on track with regular ice time in Detroit. Thanks for the memory. That one goal in the Winter Classic at Notre Dame is the only thing that is coming to mind.

In return the Blackhawks got Alec Regula. Big boy at 6’4 and 200lbs with a right shot. He was a 3rd round pick in 2018 and played the entire year for the London Knights. That is important. Adam Boqvist was obviously in London last year the Blackhawks so their scouts and player development team like Brian Campbell saw a TON of Alec Regula. Regula played a ton with Evan Bouchard who was a first round pick in the same draft. They say Regula is more of a stay-at-home type of player. I talked to one buddy who is an amateur scout and he said that Regula is raw, but a decent enough prospect. High ceiling as a defender because he is big, smart, and skates pretty well. Not a lot of offense to his game, but that’s okay. If you’re building a blue for the future and you already have Boqvist, Beaudin, Mitchell, etc in the pipeline then adding a couple guys like this is a good move. Definitely worth taking a flier on him.

Is he good? I have no idea. Will he ever play for the Blackhawks? Who knows. Probably not. Still a worthwhile gamble because the Blackhawks were never going to use Perlini and Perlini wanted out. Just one of those things. I am surprised they got a decent prospect for Perlini given the circumstances so I guess that’s a win.
