My Favorite Story Of 2019: A South Carolina Mayor (Allegedly) Had A Rec League Kickball Ump Fired Because Of A Bad Call, The Ump Is Now Suing The Mayor And Demanding An Investigation

[Source] - A recreational kickball league umpire who says the town of Moncks Corner’s mayor effectively had him fired over a call he made against the mayor’s team has filed a lawsuit and is asking the state’s top officials to investigate the mayor for possible misconduct.

The lawsuit, filed Friday in Berkeley County, accuses Moncks Corner Mayor Michael Lockliear of throwing a tantrum during an Aug. 6 kickball game and pulling strings to have Graylnn Moran Jr. removed from his part-time gig officiating games in Moncks Corner.

I mean this is it. This is my favorite story of 2019. This has everything from sports to political investigations to hating refs. I may need to get down to Moncks Corner (aka Charleston, aka the best city in America) to get a full report on this.

But here’s the back story. Lockliear admitted he yelled at umpire Graylnn Moran Jr. when Moran called Lockliear’s adult son out at home plate. Moran says the mayor stormed out to the plate and “went crazy” on him. He then had Moran fired and now Moran is suing Lockliear for that and demanding an investigation.

You know how to avoid this? Robot umps. That’s the only solution. You can’t be in the Charleston suburbs with refs making the incorrect call at home. We’re talking about rec league kickball here! Think about it. Kickball gets the adrenaline going.

I actually respect the mayor here. Fuck sportsmanship. Fuck saying it’s just rec league. You need to go out there and that title (likely a free t-shirt). Do you realize how important that is? You can’t have one guy out here incorrectly calling your son out at home plate. What if it costs you a playoff berth?

I mean MAYBE don’t make the guy (allegedly) lose his job. But I agree with the temper tantrum. You gotta teach your adult son that rec league life is serious.
