Football Guy of the Week Nominees: CFB Week 7 and NFL Week 6

Another week, another loaded slate full of Football Guys. Last week, LSU’s strength coach brought the award back to Baton Rouge, and luckily for Tiger fans, another member of the team’s coaching staff is a finalist (Hint: he’s the head coach, recurring guest, and has an electrifying voice). But there’s tough competition out there, so let’s break down the Final Four:

Coach O for telling Tom Rinaldi in an interview, “Welcome to Death Valley, where opponents’ dreams come to die.”

As I mentioned above, any time Ed Orgeron blurts out a word, it’s must-see television. But when he is saying something to 1) one of the most respected interviewers in sports and 2) under the lights of Tiger Stadium, it makes it that much better. I’ll say this, the Gators’ dreams of making the CFB Playoff are not quite done just yet. But staying undefeated and beating LSU was, indeed, a fantasy.

Kansas OC Brent Dearmon for once staying in a game while having two teeth knocked out and a hole busted underneath his mouth.

Although this may have happened a while ago when Coach Dearmon was still a player, it doesn’t take away from how good of a story it still is. Once a Football Guy, always a Football Guy. Think of it as like an enshrinement ceremony for the Hall of Fame: no matter what happens, you’re a part of the club forever.

Hall of Famer Dick Butkus for telling reporters, “Shit, I had fun knocking the shit out of people.”

Speaking of Hall of Famers, Dick Butkus spit out the truth over in Urbana-Champaign a few days ago. As scary of a sport football can be, you can tell these players still enjoy clashing in full pads and literally crushing each other. Honestly is the best policy, and Butkus ensured that here.

Patriots CB JoeJuan Williams: spends two nights a week watching youth football practices and another at a high school game because “that’s just who I am.”

If this doesn’t exemplify a New England Patriot, I don’t know what does. No days off. Always surrounding yourself with football, football, and more football. The level of play doesn’t matter, Williams is here for your local edition of Friday Night Tykes. You have to respect it.
