Shane Dawson's New Docuseries Is Just A Way To Get People To Buy His Palette, Right?

Shane Dawson has debuted a brand-new docuseries following a year in the life of prolific alien Jeffree Star. It’s supposed to be about Jeffree’s business and drama in the beauty community (oooo) as well as the production of Shane Dawson’s own makeup collection with Jeffree Star Cosmetics, as-yet named ‘Conspiracy’.

Look, I’m going to watch the whole thing. I watched the first two episodes last night and of course (as with everything that Shane Dawson makes), it’s engaging and well-made. Does Shane act like he’s never been on an airplane? Does he get freaked out by things that genuinely aren’t shocking? Of course he does. But it doesn’t matter, and it never has– everyone is fascinated by the drama that’s gone down in the last year or so in the beauty community, and he’s capitalizing on that.

And when I say capitalizing, I mean capitalizing. The first two episodes have sprinkled in 2-3 tidbits of drama, enough to keep a casual watcher hungry for more. But mostly, the storyline has been the production of Shane’s makeup and merch line. Yeah, it’s interesting to see how much money companies and influencers are making off this type of stuff, but I can’t help but feel like it’s the most in-depth advertising campaign I’ve ever seen in my life.

Shane is smart though– he puts enough actual drama into the episodes to keep you wanting more even when your evolved brain starts thinking hey, is he just trying to sell palettes? Learning that NikkieTutorials only made 50k on her collab with TooFaced? Tea. Jeffree saying that his friendship breakup with MannyMUA and Laura Lee was genuine? Tea. And the moment we heard Jeffree casually refer to James Charles as his little brother before realizing this was filmed in February and so much had yet to go down? Piping. Hot. Tea.

The next episode is supposed to be all about the drama that went down this past year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if nothing at all is revealed except for one small thing at the end of the episode. Will we finally learn whether or not Shane boned his cat? Probably not. But I’m still gonna watch it, and so will everyone else. Can’t wait for the final episode where Shane’s palette launches along with it and it sells out in seconds!!!
