Are Oklahoma City Thunder Fans Really The #1 Cult In The NBA?

Portland Trail Blazers v Oklahoma City Thunder - Game Three

With all the hooplah cause by Kevin Durant’s statements in regards to Oklahoma City and their fans, this by far is my favorite take. I’m someone that sees both sides, I get why OKC fans may have been pissed, but I also agree that Durant has the right to do whatever he wants. The only thing that doesn’t make sense is just how he gives off this idea that his decision shouldn’t upset anyone. That’s weird. But to call OKC fans the #1 cult in the NBA? No chance. Of course as a small market, Thunder fans are without a doubt passionate about their team, even if they do nothing but give them disappointment. That arena is always packed and loud as hell, but I wouldn’t call that a cult, and even if you wanted to, it’s clearly not the #1 cult in the league. Has Amin ever heard of LeBron James fans? Celtics fans? Lakers fans? Process truthers? Jazz fans? Those are all wayyyyyy more cult like than the Thunder.

Did some fans take things a little too far when the news broke that KD was leaving? Sure, fans are emotional idiots. With social media and stupid jersey burnings going viral, people do idiotic things for clout. I think it’s also interesting to remember the type of reaction that OKC fans had when George/Westbrook demanded a trade and eventually ended up on a conference rival. The situations aren’t exactly similar, but OKC fans didn’t have some crazy cult like reaction to those moves. I get what Amin was trying to say, but OKC is far down the list in terms of NBA cult fanbases. You have to remember the Thunder and Oklahoma football are basically all they have, so it’s only natural that they are going to go a little nuts about their basketball team. It looks bad when things go south because of a few assholes, but on the whole OKC is probably one of the most passionate and awesome home court advantages in the league.

Can’t wait for that first BKN/OKC game next year when Durant comes back. Something tells me it might be a load management night.
