You'll Never Guess Who Is Bringing Melo In For An Informal Workout

Now before you freak out, I have some unfortunate news. Currently, the Knicks have 15 players on their roster. Unless they plan on getting rid of someone, there’s no way Melo is officially making a return to MSG. You look at their roster and there really isn’t anyone worth replacing for Melo who in today’s NBA is more a small ball four. They already have a billion small ball fours on this team.

But if you’re Melo and you’re desperately trying to get back into the league, I suppose you take any opportunity you can get. Whether it’s a formal workout or an informal 5-on-5 with Hasheem Thabeet, it’s not like he has a ton of options. Kind of a dick move by the Knicks when you think about it, they had every opportunity to bring Melo back when free agency first started but once they struck out on every big name free agent, they decided it wasn’t worth it. Now they bring him in when they for sure don’t have a spot open for him? Rough.

This is why Melo needs to suck it up and realize perhaps his best way back to the league isn’t through these fake scrimmages, but instead through the Big 3. Everyone thought Joe Johnson was washed after he played a handful of games for the Rockets in his last season while being in his mid 30s, then he came to the Big 3, won the MVP and is getting REAL looks from multiple NBA teams. Doesn’t that sound familiar? I can think of another guy in his mid 30s who everyone felt was washed after he played a handful of games for the Rockets in his last season. It’s clear whatever Melo is currently doing working out in YMCA’s isn’s working, and if Joe Johnson ends up making a roster then the Big 3 is probably Melo’s best shot.

It’s pretty crazy when you think of what a fall from grace this has been for Melo. He’s a first ballot HOF player and a guy who has over 25,000 points and is only 34. Yet here he is hitting up scrimmages with Hasheem fucking Thabeet for a team that doesn’t even have room to bring him in. Brutal.
