Movie Trailer Roundup - July 29th

2

1. JoJo Rabbit

As the world’s foremost Taika Waititi guy, I cannot wait for this movie. It gives me similar vibes to one of my favorite satire/black comedy movies from last year ‘The Death of Stalin’, which is incredibly exciting. Also, a person I trust read the script before production and said that it’s toes the line perfectly of mocking Nazis without using it as a crutch for all of the comedic elements. Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) is starring in addition to having directed and and adapted the script. This also stars newcomer Roman Griffin Davis alongside Thomasin McKenzie (Leave no Trace), Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Scarlett Johansson (Avengers), Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect), Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) and Stephen Merchant (Life’s Too Short).

2. Gemini Man (Trailer #2)

We’ve mocked this trailer a lot on LCB, especially lately because the production team is apparently assuming this movie will be in Oscar contention. That is still ludacris, but this trailer is definitely better than the first one. If Smith has more free reign for comedic lines like the one in the beginning, this film will be better off. This stars Will Smith (I Am Legend), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo), Clive Owen (Shoot’em Up), and Benedict Wong (Avengers: Infinity War). Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) directed off a script from David Benioff (Game of Thrones), Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) and Darren Lemke (Shazam!).

3. Harriet

Harriet Tubman is undoubtedly an American hero, so it’s cool to see her finally get a movie to tell her story. Cynthia Erivo was also incredible in the two movies I most recently saw her in, ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’ and ‘Widows’. In addition to Erivo, this stars Janelle Monáe (Welcome to Marwen), Joe Alwyn (Taylor Swift’s Boyfriend) and Leslie Odom Jr. (Murder on the Orient Express). Kasi Lemmons (Black Nativity) directed and co-wrote the script with Gregory Allen Howard (Remember the Titans).

4. 21 Bridges

It’s hard to tell much from the trailer, but I like the vibe of this quite a bit. It reminds me a bit of ‘The Dark Knight’ with the exception of Boseman’s weird accent. Regardless, The Russo Brothers are attached as producers, so I’m sure it will be a quality movie. It stars Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Sienna Miller (American Sniper), Taylor Kitsch (John Carter), Keith David (There’s Something About Mary), J.K. Simmons (Spiderman: Far From Home) and Stephen James (If Beale Street Could Talk). Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones) directed off a screenplay from Adam Mervis (The Philly Kid).

5. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

6. The Goldfinch (Trailer #2)

2 trailers in and I still have no idea what the fuck is going on with this movie. It stars Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver), Nicole Kidman (Aquaman), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Sarah Paulson (Bird Box), Jeffrey Wright (Casino Royale) and Luke Wilson (Old School). It’s directed by John Crowley (Brooklyn) and the screenplay was adapted by Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

7. The Witcher

I know it’s a series and I don’t care. Full Blog
