15 Year Old Tennis Phenom Coco Gauff's Magical Run At Wimbledon Ends, But It Was One Unreal Ride

Day Seven: The Championships - Wimbledon 2019

Simona Halep def. Coco Gauff 6-3 6-3

The Coco Magic ran out today, but I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone who knew what she was going up against. Simona Halep is a bad mamma jamma and was a HEAVY favorite entering today, standing as a -650 favorite. Now being the underdog wasn’t a new thing to Coco as she was a +300 dog to Venus in the first round and somewhere around a +175 underdog to Rybarikova in the 2nd round, but this was different. Halep is a monster and she took it to Coco today. Credit to Coco though, she put a pretty good fight despite what the score might say. Almost every Halep service game she was pressured. Halep broke to start the match and Coco broke right back. She had a golden chance to go up 3-1 and a chance to serve for 4-1, but she blew two break points and lost all her momentum. I know that’s way too much tennis for this site, but what I’m saying is that it was wildly impressive how in the match she was given the circumstances.

Coco had to win three qualifier matches just to get into Wimbledon. She didn’t drop a set in any of those, as well as her first two matches against Venus and Rybarikova. Her third round match beating Hercog pretty much captivated the entire country.

As a tennis guy, it was pretty cool seeing everyone actually care about it for a change. I feel like the last time it had this much attention was when Serena had her meltdown and embarrassed herself in front of the world, completely ruining the moment for the US Open Champion. Naomi Osaka. I hope Serena never recovers from that moment because she shouldn’t be able to. You would think Coco is setting herself up pretty nicely to become the next big thing in women’s tennis, considering she’s just 15 years old. Imagine going back to high school after winning three matches at Wimbledon and being the talk of your entire country? What a fucking wild life that must be. Also how about New Balance hitting the gold mine there with Kawhi and Coco in the same month span? Not too bad by whoever helped make that happen.

Coco>Serena. Can’t wait for her to go off at the US Open in front of the New York crowd. Coco beating Serena would be unreal.
