Jay Bambruce And The Bamboo Boiz Have Officially Cuncelled The Mets

New York Mets v Philadelphia Phillies

It was just a few short days ago that Phillies fans were thinking about doing a little cuncelling of their own. The team had lost 7 games in a row. They had lost 9 out of their last 10 games. Jean Segura wasn’t hustling. Gabe Kapler wasn’t doing anything. It looked like rock bottom. That was all before Brad Miller took a little trip into Chinatown to pick up a lucky bamboo plant.

Since that move, the Phils had rattled off a pair of come-from-behind wins against the Mets. And then after being down 4-0 to the Mets last night, the Bamboo Boiz came storming back, sent the game to extra innings, bottom of the 10th, 2 on, no outs, Jay BamBruce up at the plate…

First Phillies walk-off of the season. Goodnight and happy Cuncel.

Was it the curveball machine? Was it the bamboo? Was it the fact that they’re just playing against the Mets, one of the biggest disasters in the MLB? The answer could be yes to all three of those things. But it’s a lot more fun to just credit the lucky bamboo and keep that narrative rolling through the rest of the season.

And here’s the thing–bamboo is the perfect metaphor for this team. Bamboo is strong. Bamboo is resilient. Bamboo keeps coming back no matter how hard you try to kill it. The Philadelphia Phillies have been playing bamboo baseball over the past 72 hours and as long as they keep those plants in the clubhouse, I don’t see that stopping anytime soon. Never doubt the bamboo, people. Never doubt it.
