Every Last Fucking Thing You Need To Know About Boxing Going Into This Weekend (NSFW)

Morning, all…

Little boxing blog to take you into the weekend, and just like all the rest, it will be littered with smut because I feel like littering it with smut.

random-42

First off, thoughts and prayers to Zab Judah.  The 41-year-old fighter from Brooklyn is out of the hospital after suffering “bleeding on his brain” during an 11th-round knockout loss to Cletus “The Hebrew Hammer” Seldin last Friday night.

(I think it goes without saying that The Hebrew Hammer is a fucking GREAT ring-name)

Judah  (44-10, 30 KOs) who won six world titles at welterweight and junior welterweight had a 17 month lag between his last fight and this past weekend, and I hope he is smart enough to hang it up after this loss.

I am not sure what the timing was for this next segment, but it appears Zab filmed it right before last weekend’s loss, and it is pretty fantastic to watch for anyone who hates internet trolls…

Secondly, Oscar De La Hoya is a moron.  After Gennady Golovkin knocked out Steve Rolls last Saturday… Essentially setting the table for Canelo vs GGG Part 3… Oscar tweeted this:

If Oscar is going to use GGG’s lack of belts as an excuse to postpone the fight that everyone wants to see then he is a moron for 2 reasons:

1) Having Gennady fight titleholder Demetrius Andrade before his rematch with Alvarez is a risky proposition.  Some people think Boo-Boo Andrade is untested, but he is still more than capable of beating any middleweight on any given night, and a GGG loss to Boo-Boo shoots down the appeal (and the purse) of the Canelo fight.

The stakes are very high for DAZN to put together the most intriguing fights for their streaming service, and potentially letting one of the biggest slip through their fingers because Oscar wants Canelo to win another belt is just idiotic… There are a couple of fights that are bigger than any belt, and this is one of them.

2) When Golovkin agreed to fight Alvarez back in 2017 (the fight that was inexplicably ruled a draw), it was Canelo that brought no belts to the table, but GGG fought him anyway.  Oscar knows this, so the whole “win a belt, and I’ll consider doing the 3rd fight” is at the very least- hypocritical, and at the very most- extremely stupid.

Thirdly, The Gypsy King fights tomorrow night.  Tyson Fury is back in action against an unbeaten German named Tom Schwarz that nobody has ever heard of because all of his fights have taken place in Eastern Europe.

Even after a goofy weigh-in, I can still say that, unlike Andy Ruiz Jr, Schwarz does not have a chance against Fury.

And unlike Joshua, Fury is only a lineal champ, so he does not have any belts on the line.

Either way, I will tune in.  It’ll be on ESPN+ with an undercard consisting of a pair of 2 loss light-heavyweights (Sullivan Barrera vs Jesse Hart) squaring off at 10 PM.

Fourthly, Deontay Wilder stills says stupid shit.  Before his own fight vs Dominick Breazeale, Deontay stole headlines saying he would like to get paid to kill his opponent.  Before Joshua vs Ruiz, Wilder stole the spotlight saying his rematch vs Fury would take place sometime early in 2020.  Now before the Fury fight, The Bronze Bomber said this…

I think Deontay’s comments solidify my belief that if you had to pick one active heavyweight to “have your back” in a street fight, it would be a hard-punching loose-cannon like Wilder.

But if you needed some help on the SATs?… Not so much.

Lastly, here’s the big ending…

Gerry Cooney is up at Barstool HQ this morning at 8 AM.  He’s promoting his new book- Gentleman Gerry: A Contender in the Ring, a Champion in Recovery.  The book outlines the challenges and triumphs of a professional prize-fighter and an alcoholic’s journey to sustained recovery.  I mentioned De La Hoya’s hypocrisy earlier, but due to scheduling constraints, The Gentleman is visiting Barstool Breakfast on a seemingly apropos, but booze-soaked, Gentleman’s Friday.  I spoke with both him and his managers and have confirmed that Cooney doesn’t mind telling his story of recovery in front of three drunk idiots.

Then later on tonight, I will be on Gerry’s show talking all things boxing… Fight Night w/ Cooney & Commissioner Randy Gordon (who is tiny) from 7-8 PM on SiriusXM channel 156.
