There ya have it. Eric Decosta’s first pick as GM of the Baltimore Ravens and he takes the dynamic receiver from Oklahoma. The Ravens are quickly building an electric offense and I could not be more excited.

Yes, the Ravens have a traumatic history when it comes to drafting WR’s. Not just in the first round, but in general. But living in fear is no way to go through life. Can’t let the mistakes of yesterday make you afraid of making the right decisions today. This pick makes a ton of sense on a lot of levels.

I could rant for hours about how Joe Flacco was never really given the help on offense that he deserved. He never really had those receivers to grow and develop with, and the few that they did draft never really panned out. Torrey Smith as a late 2nd round pick is as close as you can get to a capable NFL WR taken in the draft. This pick shows a commitment to Lamar Jackson’s development, and gives the offense yet another weapon for defenses to fear.

Just think about it. Safeties are already prone to cheat and play up in the box to try to defend Lamar and the RPO. When you’ve got a guy who can absolutely FLY like Marquise Brown, you have to respect that speed. It opens up so many options for this offense, and forces teams to think twice when they gameplan. The most common comparison Brown has gotten is Desean Jackson. That speaks volumes to what type of weapon this guy is.

Better yet, this is a guy the Ravens probably would’ve been happy to take at 22nd from then jump, and they were able to pick up a 4th and a 6th rounder from the Eagles to move back to 25th. Like any 1st round pick, time will tell if this was the right pick over say, Montez Sweat or DK Metcalf or perhaps an O-lineman, but at the moment this feels right.

Lot of picks left, but none until the 85th pick late tomorrow night. Having said that, they have the 85th, 102nd, 113th, 123rd, and 127th picks in the 3rd and 4th rounds. More than enough ammo to get back into the 2nd round if they really like a guy. If not, they’ve got a lot of darts to throw in a range where they’ve had a lot of success. Gotta expect an edge rusher, an interior O-lineman, and an inside linebacker among those 5 picks. Excited to see where this is headed.
