UNDERHILL, Vt. —
A Vermont girl isn’t happy that her disabled pet chicken was joked about on “Saturday Night Live.”

The chicken, named Granite Heart, is learning to walk with a custom wheelchair.

On a recent SNL episode, the television show’s “Weekend Update” co-host said she should “just eat the chicken.”

Ten-year-old Alora Wood of Underhill, Vermont, tells NECN-TV that she knows the segment was meant to be a joke, but asks what if it was a dog.

The chicken was born with a deformed foot.

“Any creature, no matter how big, no matter how small, they deserve to have a perfect life,” Alora said.

The custom wheelchair came from a company in Amherst, New Hampshire, that makes pet wheelchairs.

You all know that I’m passionate about chicken health and serving the chicken community. Every day, I get on the phones and call local chicken veterinarians and thank them for fashioning wheelchairs for our local, free-range chickens. So when I hear a story like this one, it rocks me to my chicken bones.

This little girl is absolutely right. The moment that you strap a wheelchair to ANY animal, that animal ceases to be a farm animal and becomes a member of your family.

Wheelchair on a pig? That’s a pet.
Wheelchair on a cow? Pet.
Wheelchair on a tank of farmed catfish? Those are pets.

Would Saturday Night Live suggest that someone eats a fucking cow or a pig? I dont think so. Eating a pig would be tasteless.

Apologize, SNL or my streak of not watching your show will continue for another year. You have one hour to respond.
