If You Were Looking For Something Entertaining To Happen In Sports This Past Weekend, Army v Navy Lacrosse Did Not Disappoint

army-navy2019

Life as a sports fan gets pretty difficult around this time of year. Just this past weekend we had The Masters, both the NBA and NHL playoffs, the NCAA Men’s Hockey National Championship, regular season MLB action, and some futbol to watch as well. It was pretty much just 48 straight hours of this.

Now the difficult thing about that is the fact that sometimes, there are simply too many sports to choose from. It would be physically impossible for you to watch everything that went on over this past weekend. So you needed to be strategic in assessing which sporting events were worth your time and attention, and which events you would just have to cut from your viewing schedule.

Well let me tell you this, boys and girls. If any of you decided to cut the 100th meeting between Army and Navy lacrosse out of your schedule, you are about as moronic as they come. Because the Troops? Well they came to ball yesterday.

Typically I’m not a huge fan of defensive highlights. They’ve just never really been my thing. For some reason they don’t exactly get me going the same way that filthy goals and filthy dodges do. But when you’ve got the guys who will be in charge of defending your nation out there de-twigging guys with vicious trail checks like this? All I’m saying is that if you show this clip to ISIS, they’ll surrender right there on the spot. They’ll pack it up and be done forever. They don’t want any of that smoke.

And down at the other end of the field? Well you knew that the battle of the Troops was going to come down to the wire. You think the guys who are storming the beach of Normandy are just going to go out there and not battle to the death for 60+ minutes on a lacrosse field? Get real. This was going to be a war and it turns out that a 60 minute war wasn’t long enough. And with the game in overtime, it was Matt Manown to give the Black Knights their first win over Navy since 2014.

Little crease dive in overtime for the win. Thank whatever god you believe in that college lacrosse finally smartened up and decided to bring the dive back because it doesn’t get any better than that.

And in case that wasn’t enough, here are some more highlights from this past weekend in college lacrosse.

– First up, we had Boston pulling off a massive upset over Loyola. It’s not that Loyola hasn’t been unbeatable this season. But the only times they’ve lost so far is during the middle of the week. So for BU to pull off this 18-11 win against Weekend Loyola? Huuuuuge.

– Then we had Georgetown holding on to pull off a 16-13 “upset” over Villanova. I mean Georgetown and Villanova are pretty even but considering Villanova was still a top 20 team this weekend, it’s still a big time win for the Hoyas. Pretty important win when it comes to seeding in the Big East tournament.

– Ohio State got back in the win column with a 14-13 win over Hopkins. Penn has now when 7 games in a row after doubling up Harvard 26-13. Cornell takes down the Irish 11-9. And UMass gets a big 14-10 win over Towson who has now lost 4 times in their last 6 games after being ranked #1 in the nation.
