GoT Fan Theory Of The Day: Danger, Here Be (Ice) Dragons?

Hi, spoilers, don’t keep reading if you don’t want to know stuff.

I’m somewhat bored of the Season 8 theories so I wanted to find one that combines some absolutely batshit insane DEEP Thrones theory with something that could make S8 more interesting.

So… we’ve landed on Ice Dragons.

((This theory is brought to us by OPDidn’tDeliver on Reddit))

Bear with me, I’ve got a lot to get through. Basically the legends about Ice Dragons are pretty intense. They’re bigger than Valyrian dragons (that’s what Daenerys’ dragons are) and they breathe ice (but ice that’s so cold it’s hot. Like dry ice. You feel?) and when they die, they melt. (You can read more about them here if you’re interested)

Here’s where it gets tricky. In the books, Winterfell is always warm because it’s built on top of hot springs. However, the ‘smallfolk’ who live near Winterfell say that actually, deep within the crypts of Winterfell, there are dragons wandering around keeping everything warm. This is somewhat based in fact because apparently way back in the day, some Targaryen prince or another flew his dragon Vermax to Winterfell to meet with a King of the North and Vermax was forced to chill out in the crypts, where she allegedly laid eggs.

But that’s not all!!! The only body of water at Winterfell that’s supposedly cold is the one in the Godswood:

What if, and this is very tinfoil-y, the reason the heart tree pond is cold (even though it’s next to a hot spring) is because it’s not just some random pool but the dead remnants of an ice dragon? It’s not unreasonable to think ice dragons’ melted remains wouldn’t just evaporate but, due to magical properties, would be a cold pool of water.

The theory goes on to explain that Winterfell is so named because an ice dragon named Winter died there, and the Stark words warn of its looming return:

How cool would it be if “winter is coming” is not just a warning about your heating bill going up, but warns about an ice dragon named Winter? An ice dragon that fell at Winterfell?

So, this is where I’m going to diverge from the theory a little bit. Put a second, smaller tinfoil hat on top of the one you’re already wearing and come along on this journey with me. There’s two parts of this theory that could be equally interesting for Season 8.

Part 1: Vermax laid eggs under Winterfell

OoooooOooOOooh. What if there is a Dragon under Winterfell, and we can replace Daenerys’ dead dragon with a brand spankin’ new one? Plus it would be a super sick metaphor because it’s a Targaryen dragon in the Stark ancestral home… a Stark-Targaryen hybrid just like our boi Jon Snow.

Part 2: The dead Ice Dragon

So… what if the hypothetical dead Ice Dragon that formed the pool near the heart tree will be resurrected? Maybe because the second Long Night has come so like… it’ll be cold enough to re-form the dragon? Like when Frosty the Snowman becomes a puddle but then reforms into Frosty when it gets cold again, you know? (What a reference!!)

Maybe it could be the only thing to kill the Night King for good? Or what if it’s the only thing that could kill the white walker dragon! Imagine how sick it would be if Jon Snow showed up riding an ICE DRAGON. I know people don’t want the Night King to be defeated TOO easily, but I think we can all agree that watching someone (Jon? Tyrion? Arya? SAM??) ride an ICE dragon into battle to mow down the white walkers would be frickin sa-weeeeet.

Is this theory possible? Not really. I mean, it’s not NOT, but because a lot of these details were never mentioned in the show, it probably won’t happen. But is it plausible? I’ll give it an easy 5/10. And you can’t deny it’s spicy as heck, 8/10. Overall, this theory is an 6.5/10.
