What Exactly Are The Mavs Suggesting? It Better Be What We're All Hoping For

OK, I’ll bite. You can’t just randomly tweet out 41.21.1 with and eye emoji and not expect NBA Twitter to do their thing. Not when Dirk’s retirement has been iffy all season long and while all of us have spent the year celebrating him he’s been adamant that nothing is set in stone. In fact, he recently said he felt great for this time of year and was excited about the Mavs future. Now after some consideration here’s the different scenarios I could think of.

Option 1

Tonight Dirk will most likely score more than 4 points will officially have him pass Wilt on the all time scoring list. Maybe this is a tribute tweet for that soon to be accomplishment. A subtle way to shout Dirk out for what is going to be one hell of a moment celebrating his entire run as a Mav.

Option 2

They’re just shouting out Dirk for spending 21 seasons with 1 franchise just for the hell of it. To me this is a little weird, I mean why do that in mid March? If that’s the case then why the emoji. Something doesn’t pass the smell test for that simple of a post. That could be something we see at the end of the year if it comes out that Dirk is in fact hanging them up, but this early? I’m not buying that.

Option 3

This is their way of saying Dirk told them it’s a wrap. I refuse to believe this so please let’s move on.

Option 4

Dirk is coming back. I choose to read this as Dirk, 21 seasons, 1 more. Is that my own personal bias because I want Dirk to play forever? Yup. But you’re guess is as good as mine and I’m choosing to believe. I’m looking at him still producing at an acceptable level, all his comments about feeling great, the future of the Mavs and all their cap space this summer and then this tweet. If that’s not announcing a guy coming back without actually announcing it then I don’t know what is. Open ended enough to where Dirk still has an out if things change, but also their way of saying “hey, Dirk told us as of now he’s leaning towards coming back”.

It’s a stretch, but not the craziest thing in the world.

I also don’t really care that it would look silly that everyone is spending this season celebrating Dirk if he were to come back next year. He’s one of those legends where he deserves it and would absolutely get the same treatment again next season if it were to happen. He’s been adamant about how he didn’t really love the tribute love anyway, and it’s not like someone like Wade or Kobe who were all about their farewell tours. If anyone deserves two separate retirement tours it’s Dirk, and I’m going to be very mad online if this isn’t the Mavs telling us Dirk isn’t hanging it up. Remember it was like last week where we had Vince Carter commit to coming back and he talked about how he was going to try and convince Dirk as well. Maybe he finally got through.

Now, your obligatory Dirk highlights because why the hell not
